No. 13 Men's Golf Wins Trinity Forest Invitational By 27 Strokes

DALLAS – The No. 13 SMU men's golf team dominated wire-to-wire, winning the Trinity Forest Invitational by 27 strokes Tuesday. This marks SMU's first of the season, and the third in eight stroke play events under head coach Chris Parra.

"Today was a great day; everybody on the team played awesome golf," Parra said. "It's not easy in the final round with a big lead, just to keep digging and fight for every stroke. I'm just really proud of the way they handled today, especially with the weather and the gusts of wind that came up."

"Now, we'll take a few days off and get ready for the Valspar Collegiate Invitational," Parra remarked.

It is SMU's first time winning the Trinity Forest Invitational in its four-year history after second place finishes each of the past two seasons. It is SMU's first win in any home tournament since the 2001 SMU Stonebridge Invitational.

SMU demolished the record for margin-of-victory in the event, besting Florida's 10-stroke win in 2017. The Mustangs were the only team in the 14-school field under par for the tournament. UTSA finished second at +10. The Mustangs shot -13 in the final round, the best round by any team on Tuesday by 10 strokes.

Four Mustangs posted top-five finishes in the event, led by Noah Goodwin, who finished second at -6 after a final-round 69. Goodwin finished a stroke behind Little Rock's Anton Albers, who sank a 25-foot putt on the final hole to cap a bogey-free 64. Goodwin has finished in the top-10 in each of the last three Trinity Forest Invitationals, tying for seventh in 2018 and 2019.

Mac Meissner finished third, completing this tournament in the top six for the fourth consecutive year. Meissner had a bogey-free 67, making him one of four players to complete the tournament without a round over-par.

Nathan Petronzio and Ollie Osborne tied for fourth at -3. Petronzio had a career-best scorecard for the second consecutive day, shooting a 4-under 67 that included a bogey-free -5 on the front nine. Osborne went bogey-free for his first 13 holes to finish with a 3-under 68. It is a season-best finish for Osborne, and a career-best finish for the freshman Petronzio.

Justin Thompson, who led SMU's "B" team, finished tied for 20th at +6. Thompson had a third-round 74 with a pair of birdies. It is the first top-25 finish of the season for Thompson.

Prescott Butler tied for 28th at +9, his second top-30 finish at SMU. Butler had a final-round 77 to round out SMU's starting five.

Alex Valenzuela and Dawson Ovard finished at +12 and tied for 46th. Valenzuela played his second nine at even par to post a 73. Ovard used 74 strokes to get around the par 71 / 7,330-yard course at the outskirts of the Great Trinity Forest.

Tyson Dinsmore tied for 54th at +14, using three birdies to shoot 74. Ben Wong tied for 74th at +26, shooting his best round of the tournament, a 73.

The Mustangs return to action March 15-16 at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Houston in Palm City, Florida.
