Mustangs Sweep Memphis To Begin AAC Play

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU swept Memphis 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 26-24) to begin American Athletic Conference play. Hannah Jacobs led the offensive attack with 15 kills and hit .591 on the afternoon. Jadyn Bauss secured her second double-double on the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. SMU registered the second highest hitting percentage (.336) on the campaign.

SMU (5-6, 1-0 AAC) got things started early jumping out to a 7-4 lead. Memphis (7-6, 0-1 AAC) gained some momentum when Gigi Crescenzo knocked down consecutive aces. The Tigers reclaimed the lead (14-11), but the Mustangs battled back to tie it up 16. SMU finished the first set on a 5-2 scoring run to take the first set of conference play. Set two was tied at 13, but this is when the Tigers rallied and went up by four (18-14). With their backs against the wall, the Mustangs found some much needed offense from Kaylyn Winkler when they needed it most. Winkler hit consecutive kills in what was a 4-0 SMU run. Memphis tested SMU all the way until set point, tying the match up at 23 and 24. Rachel Woulfe gave the Mustangs the lead after both of those ties and later finished off the Tigers in set two with a kill from the right side. Jacobs and Woulfe were big contributors in this set as they combined for 11 kills.

Memphis once again led in the third (15-12). A 5-0 SMU run erased the Memphis lead and pushed the Mustangs out in front. The Tigers never gave in after this run and cut the SMU lead down to one (23-22). The Tigers later knotted the match up out of the timeout with an ace from Mackenzie Leach. Jacobs helped SMU get over the edge with two kills from the left side to give SMU the conference victory. Jacobs notched 13 of her 15 kills in the final two sets.

Lily Heim dished out 29 assists on the afternoon to set up the offense. A trio of Mustangs secured double-digit digs on the day, as Makayla Miller led this group with 12. Woulfe added 11 kills to put three SMU players in double figures in kills. Winkler and Jacobs both notched three block assists to lead the team.

Tabytha Toelke led Memphis with 14 kills, while Miaya Smith added 11. Bailey Houlihan picked up 11 digs and Crescenzo tabbed four block assists for the Tigers.

Nice to start AAC with a win after tough non-conference slate.
Good job.
