We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveHouston shocked a lot of people when they went and hired Dana Holgorsen and his staff from West Virginia. We should go and get Manny Diaz and his staff, which includes Rhett Lashlee as OC, from Miami. They just fired their AD and rumors have Diaz probably out when they hire their new AD. When Houston made their move for Holgorsen they were G5 - now they are going to be P5!
Diaz and his crew won 8 games last year and will probably finish 7-5 this year - they are 6-5 with their last game against Duke. 7-5 this year is not that bad with games against Alabama, App. State, Michigan State and the AAC teams. Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveFYI - The Miami staff has strong Texas ties for recruiting!
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveDiaz is a great defensive coordinator. Not sure if he is a great head coach.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveHe has probably learned a lot in his first head coaching job. They won 8 games last year and are bowl eligible this year with a tough schedule. They are 6-5 this year, probably will finish 7-5 after this weeks game against N Carolina. Schedule included Alabama, App. State and Michigan State - plus AAC teams! Compare that to our schedule this year and next.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveGreat, so we lost our coach because we couldn’t match P5 salary and now you think we can hire a P5 coach and his current staff. Really? Where’s the money coming from?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveMy understanding is that we WERE willing to match P5 money. That offer is (or at least was) on the table.

Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveThen perhaps the real problem is working for Hart. There seems to be a pattern of coaches bailing after about three years here. Is Hart the real problem? Unfortunately it’s out of our hands.

Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveWe are talking about a P5 coaching staff that is good and about to get the AX! The money we were talking about for Sonny would probably get the job done if they were willing to come to SMU. Diaz might want to get back to Texas? All we are talking about is one call to an agent!
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MovePK - where does the money always come from - The Circle! Where do you think the new money was coming from for what would have been Sonny's new deal. All of us that have fairly normal lives should be very greatfull for their huge gifts to our program.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching Move
I am very thankful, but I’m fearful that the Circle has grown tired of supporting a Admin and AD that is not following their example. SMU's first president, Robert S. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching Move“the Circle” has the power. If they decide Hart and Turner and Yank need to go, they will be gone. I fear they have become as complacent as the administration.
Long live Inez Perez!
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching Move
and this pending decision completely supports your thinking that all of them have become complacent or non-supportive of having championship caliber sports teams (fball and bball).
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching Move
It's what happens when a mid-level program experiences success: big programs poach coaches.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching MoveHouston had one guy driving the bus (Tilman Fertitta). In his third year, many fans wanted to fire Dana after the Tech loss and spotty QB play. It takes patience. Pony fans have been patient.
The main guy driving SMU hoops (David Miller) didn't seem to want Jank fired last year. Maybe the buyout was too much, Covid excuses for attendance and there were good recruiting prospects. Now, well... After UH pledged to pay P5 money to Herman, we ended up "going down the hall" and hired Applewhite for his strong Texas ties and many OC stops. Two years later, the Coogs lost to Army in the AF Bowl by like 70-14. An unfathomable loss sort of like Texas losing at Kansas in Strong's last year. Rhett seems quite strong. He was highly thought of when Sonny picked him up and he recruited (?) and developed Shane which led to Tanner coming. Wasn't TM running second string at OU ahead of Chandler? If so, it shows that recruits will pick Dallas and SMU over TCU in the right circumstances. Rhett wouldn't be a down the hall type hire. The only issue is that he could leave for Arkansas someday but oh well, hope he'd be good enough to be the Hogs top choice when that time comes.
Re: We should Do A U. of Houston Coaching Move
we offered 4 mil a year for 7 years/ That is mid tier p5 and would have been the highest paid G5 school
