SMU Rowing Repeats as American Athletic Conference Champions

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – No. 12 SMU won all four races and successfully defended its American Athletic Conference Women's Rowing Championship Sunday, May 15, on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge.

The Mustangs finished with 168 points to win the team title. UCF finished as the runner-up for the second year in a row and totaled 144 points. Tulsa placed third with 104 points. Temple was fourth with 104 points as well, but the Golden Hurricane earned the tiebreaker by placement in the Varsity 8. Sacramento State was fifth with 76 points, while Old Dominion was sixth with 52 points.

After a delay to repair the boat that was damaged in the warm-up, the SMU Varsity 8 captured the title with a time of 6:36.063, ahead of UCF (6:44.287) and Tulsa (6:47.666). The crew consisted of coxswain Sasha Radovanovic, Daisy Butterworth, Megan Hewison, Madison van Meel, Alice Fahey, Peyton Matthews, Colombe de Rouvroy, Juliet Traylor and Jasmine Brake.

The Mustangs won the Second Varsity 8 in a time of 6:41.584, almost 13 seconds ahead of second-place UCF (6:54.387). Temple finished third in 7:00.381. The SMU crew consisted of coxswain Addison Iliria, Sophie Hill, Sydney Suntrup, Victoria Franklin, Amy Salesky, Gracie Condon, Claire Murphy, Sarah Abrams and Anne Ensley.

In the Varsity 4, SMU's crew of coxswain Eleanor Bomberg, Laura Purvis, Emily Baker, Allison Lea and Lauren Bilafer crossed the line in 7:27.299. UCF placed second in 7:36.436 and the Golden Hurricane finished third in 7:45.253.

In the first race of the day, SMU won the Second Varsity 4 in 7:33.157, ahead of UCF (7:48.987) and Temple (8:18.049). The Mustangs' crew consisted of coxswain Hallie Wilson, Sarah Wood, Channing Taner and Macey Adley.

SMU's coaching staff, led by head coach Kim Cupini, was named the American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.

With the conference win, SMU automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championship, to be held May 27-29 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The selection show for the national regatta takes place Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. Eastern on NCAA.com.
