Another good Whitmire article

Has Whitmire replaced Alonzo with the SMU beat for the DMN - the bio lists him as covering Baylor...no wonder he always writes about the Ponies.
It lists Alonzo as a L.B. State Grad - who seems to be more of a brainiac then a sports guy - Alonzo says he would be a pysch. grad student if not a writer.

Rick Alonzo is a good writer and a very smart guy. But no, he has not been replaced by Whitmire as the SMU beat writer. The DMN wouldn't let an SMU grad cover his or her alma mater - meaning no Whitmire on the SMU beat - because (A) it would destroy the credibility of stories written, and (B) they might actually have someone who genuinely cares about SMU, and we all know that won't fly with DMN sports. Rick seems to care about the folks at SMU, and I think he'll do a good job. Keith is more of a catch-all —— he covers Baylor High, and he also fills in with his Big 12 columns, an occasional SMU column, special features, etc.
