This happened right in front of the SMU stands as the cheerleaders were spelling out SMU on the field. I was about 15 rows up and had a bird's eye view of the whole thing. The Aggies have a rule that only players are allowed on the field. Our cheerleaders went on the field to perform a cheer and an Aggie cadet (Greg Hood) pulled his sword and went right for them. I remember one of the cheerleaders getting on all fours behind the guy and the other pushing him over the guy who was bent down. Lucky thing he didn't fall on his sword as he or one of the cheerleaders could have been severly injured. I remember that the Aggie President was quoted in the papers afterword that he was never as shocked and mortified as he was when Hood drew his sword. He profusely apologized to SMU President Donald Shields who was sitting right next to him at the game. I also heard that Hood was kicked out of school but is highly revered in Aggie land.

Here is a Aggie thread about the incident. Read the post by Southlake describing Hood. Pretty funny!

I was probably sitting next to you. What a sight to see. The next year at Texas Stadium some group associated with SMU (fraternity?) handed out sponge rubber swords to wave in the stands.

Hood is not just revered here in Aggie lore, but was wonderfully defended for his actions by maroon kool-aiders..he is to this day.

Interesting side is that there was talk that he would be brought up on Assault with a Deadly Weapon charges...quick redaction of the action was played that Hood never threatened the SMU cheerleader (see first screen-capture above) but simply wanted to 'make a point ( I know, I know) that Kyle Field was sacred ground not for cheerleaders.'

This from a DA that was practicing here in College Station area at that time....no charges brought, everybody walks away OK...except Aggie has a bruise.

kind of ruins the whole pseudo military tough guy thing when a cheerleader kicks your butt.

not sure why anyone would revere that guy - he was a total embarassment - made them all look like geeks.

every time I've read about him on TexasAgs.com they've considered him one of the biggest embarrassments in their long and heralded history

But it is interesting that there is a rather lively debate on the Aggie board as to whether this guy is an embarrassment or some kind of a hero. One of my best friends was a yell leader down there, but even he is quick to admit some of their folks have a few loose screws.

The aggie kicks the downed cheerleader before he gets pushed down. On Texags I saw where people said he never actually assaulted anybody. I guess they need to watch it again!
