Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-It is an immaculate, large coffee-table sized book filled with pictures from the SMU Archives [DeGolyer Library, SMU] and SMU’s Heritage Hall.
From the days of Kyle Rote... ...and Doak Walker... ...to Eric Dickerson and the Pony Express.

Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-Be aware that due to some confusion, some who purchased this fine book were accidentally shipped 2 copies. If that happens, please send the extra copy back or the additional money for the 2nd book. I am sure they did not build in profit margin to supply 2 for 1.

Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-Thanks. The Lettermen's Association held a book-signing and publication event event on January 20th (http://smumustangs.cstv.com/genrel/011311aaa.html) at the Paul Lloyd All Sports Center to show off the book. I don't think you can gain a real appreciation for how impressive it is until you see it in person--I've posted some photos online (and may post some more) in order for the PonyFans to catch a small glimpse of what is has to offer.
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-A chronological history of SMU Athletics (all sports, not just football)...
...from National Championships... ...to days when rare wins were savored... ...to more recent triumphs.
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-The book is incredible. It has over 600 pictures and is everything SMU athletics. If you have an extra buck then you should buy this book. The Lettermen's Association worked very hard to put a quality book out for every SMU alum to enjoy, so if you have the urge to support SMU athletics this off season then go pick up one of these books. They make great gifts also.
Also, they sell them out of Culwell and Son's on Hillcrest right across from campus. Usually, the team that scores the most points wins the game - John Madden
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-SMU, #1 in the Nation:
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-It is, indeed, an awesome book. Very thorough.
Only nitpicks are 1) I wish it included a section of color photographs, even if it would have meant an extra $10 or even $20 per book. Ten pages of color photographs, from Doak to [deleted][erson], would have blown you away. 2) With all the great photographs at their disposal, I would have gone a different direction with the cover. Either a collage of all the great SMU athletes, or one action shot that portrays the excitement and passion for SMU athletics. Maybe they can make those changes for the second edition! Still, it's a fantastic archive of SMU athletics history. It's a must-have for anyone who bleeds red and blue. And if you know anyone who does, it makes the perfect gift. Bravo to Darwin, Gerry and all involved!
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-The reason no color photos were included is that it was very important that the price of the book stayed under $50. Although I am sure the majority of us would gladly pay over $50 for this book, the reality is the price needed to stay under $50 so the "less enthusiastic" SMU fans/casual observers would be more likely to pick up a copy. The book is awesome, and I am sure a lot of people were excited to pick one up. However, you start to scare off a lot of people once you start charging $50 and over.
Also, the reason the cover photo was selected is that the committee wanted to use a photo that was new and captured as much as possible. If a classic or very one sport focused photo was chosen, then everyone would probably have an opinion as to why or why not that would be the correct cover. The idea of this photo was the really cool and new mustang statue is in there, Ford stadium is in the background, and so is downtown Dallas. Those elements, all in the same photo, really do make for the best cover for the newest SMU sports history book. Just seemed the most logical. Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-
Personally, I prefer black & white (unlike John Wiley Price). This book is an instant classic. The cover is perfect. There are no shortcomings in this fine documentation of the story of SMU athletics. Thanks for the memories.
Re: IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS: History of SMU Athletics,1911-
very funny. Did you just hear the interview Gordon Keith did with him on the Ticket? He still thinks the term "black hole" is racist. And I'm definitely picking up a copy of the book. "This is . . . dedication to distraction by fans. Is that what I'm going to go with Jay?"
