Calatrava - Dallas Hall Fountain

Postby friarwolf » Wed Aug 10, 2005 4:15 pm

Picture this. An early Saturday afternoon in the fall and the Boulevard is in full swing before the ball game. You look toward Dallas Hall and the SMU version of the Bellagio fountains are erupting right on time. The signature Calatrava mini-suspension bridge bisecting the newly enlarged fountain pool is filled with people enjoying the water show. Or, people standing on the raised Calatrava suspension viewing areas surrounding the fountains are enjoying the show. What a great new focal point for the center of the campus. Put a lighting package with it and imagine how awesome that would look at night.

With the new capital campaign around the corner, what a nice addition this would be for the 2011 celebration. What does everyone think?

Friarwolf,

What is your source? I am a major Calatrava fan, who is a world class architect. His "Wave" on Bishop is memorable. Any links?

No source - just my imagination running wild. I was on campus the other day and just thought how cool it would be to enhance the fountain. I think pulling something off like that could make that one of the most visible images of Dallas.

Sounds pretty, but I'd rather the money go to other improvements, like a new natatorium, a refurbished Wescott field, or even a renovated Moody. Just my opinion though.

Ditto:

1) New Natatorium
2) Renovate Moody, including Practice Gyms and Volleyball Court
3) Update Westcott, quality fencing, brick facades and facility improvements
4) More Intramural fields, including Club Sports, e.g. Lacrosse

Think big....OK, let's put something like that in front of the Bush Library
in our presentation package to help get the library to SMU. If we don't,
then we'll talk about putting it at the fountain at Dallas Hall.

I know you dont go by Water Pony for nothing, and we need a new natatorium, but doing something about Moody has to far and away be #1 on any list of athletic facility issues.

What did you expect from Water Pony? How about 1A and 1B? Moody is a bit more presentable.

Perkins Natorium must support four teams Men's Swimming & Diving (divers can't practice at the same time as swimmers with no diving well) as well as our impressive Women's teams. Six lanes and 25 yards is insufficient for high school programs, especially when Boys and Girls HS often have different season unlike college.

Moody supports three Men's and Women's BB, plus Women's Volleyball.

Both deserve immediate attention.
