By reaching the 2009 Hawaii Bowl, the SMU Mustangs ended a 25-year postseason drought. By demolishing Nevada, 45-10, in Honolulu, the Ponies did more than win a bowl game - they made a statement to the nation that SMU football was officially competitive once more. In the only televised game in the nation that day, the Ponies reminded the football-watching world that SMU boasts one of the truly innovative minds of the game in head coach June Jones, and that the talent assembled on the Hilltop is improving to a level that the Ponies now can expect to compete for conference championships and bowl bids.
Over the next 10 days, PonyFans.com will publish the largest and most comprehensive season preview in the history of SMU football. Jones, his assistant coaches and his players will discuss how the Mustangs have prepared for a season that brings with it more excitement than any at SMU in more than two decades, and who will play key roles as the Ponies try for their second consecutive bowl bid.
Enjoy!
