Strengths as a Player
Christian Davis is a strong, intelligent cornerback who has excellent footwork and thrives when engaging in physical battles with receivers at the line of scrimmage. Graduation from the 2014 team forced the Midway coaches to move someone over to safety, and Davis volunteered to make the move, a decision that should benefit him in the long term because it forced him to study and read defenses from a new perspective, and to gain a better overall understanding of his team’s defensive schemes.
Interviews
Christian Davis on why he chose SMU:
Honestly, a big part of the decision was the coaching staff and the relationship I have with Coach (Jess) Loepp, and now the other coaches.
(Loepp) was honest with me all the way — more honest than some other coaches. He said he thought SMU liked me, but he said they wouldn’t offer me until they saw me in person. A lot of other coaches offered me just because someone else had offered, but Coach Loepp said SMU doesn’t operate that way. I wanted to be somewhere that they believe in me, and the fact that they only offered after they saw me showed that they do believe in me.
Coach Loepp and I didn’t just talk about football. He wanted to know how my day was going, how my family was doing. He’s just a good, honest guy.
I also loved the campus — it’s just a beautiful place — and the city of Dallas. I think I want to live there when I’m done playing, so going to school there makes sense.
SMU has one of the best business schools in the nation. I’ve been taking accounting classes in my junior and senior years, and I took a great interest in it. My accounting teacher is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, which helps make it interesting. I just like math — always have — and I really enjoy accounting, so the chance to go to a school like that is one you’ve got to take.
(Ben Hicks) and I are pretty close — we have known each other since we were little. I talked to him a bit after I went to (SMU’s) camp, and he just said, “this is the right place for you — hop on board.â€
(Fellow Midway High School graduate) Shakiel Randolph also talked to me. He graduated my eighth grade year, I think, but I he talked to me a bit at the camp. He said SMU is a great place and that he loved playing there, and said he thought I would love it there, too.
I don’t know if I’m done growing, but I don’t think so. My grandpa is 6-4 (or) 6-5. I don’t think I’ll get that tall, but maybe I’ll get to 6-1 or 6-2. I don’t know.
The coaches told me to get ready, because they want me coming in to compete. If I’m mentally and physically prepared, I’ll get to play. If not, they won’t put me out there. They’re not going to play me until I’m ready, but I’m going to show up and try to compete.
