Strengths as a Player
Brandon Benson is a big, fast receiver with enough athletic ability that has the chance to take over any game. He's bigger than just about any defensive back La Vega faces, and he
Interviews
La Vega head coach Willie Williams on Brandon Benson:
Quarterbacks coach Robert Glynn:
We used Brandon to the fullest. He’s a big body, he’s a fast guy and he’s diligent in running his routes. Coach (Williams) loves to run the ball, but we made sure to get him the ball, because with that much running, people would one-on-one him, and when they did, we always tried to get it to him. We felt like if he was in a one-on-one, that meant he was open. That was a matchup we liked every time.
He’s not a selfish player. When other teams try to run brackets on him, that meant someone else was open someplace — it was a “pick your poison.â€
He’s a little like Dez Bryant or Justin Blackmon — that kind of player: big, fast, and with great body control that allows him to go up and fight for any ball.
SMU will love him. He’s an exceptional student, he’s never a behavioral problem. He’s part of a mentoring program called “Chosen Few.†He comes from a great family, with great parents and a little brother who really looks up to him.
Coach Stepp is going to be a great coach for him, and so is Coach Morris. They have been here, and they have shown that they will take care of him academically, as well as athletically. That’s really important to us at La Vega High School.
His dad is a big guy, so maybe Brandon is still growing, and he’s a great guy, at that. Brandon wants to make his dad proud at all times. I always tease Brandon that his little brother says he’s going to be better than Brandon, but he loves that — he’s proud of his little brother. But he’s just scratching the surface. He has a lot more room for growth inside, and in his game.
His family was a large part of his decision. He chose SMU in part so he could be close enough that his family could come up and see him.
I know he had a great time on his visit to SMU. There were some other schools that tried to get him, but SMU, hands down, was Brandon’s No. 1 pick. We have got a lot of good athletes around here, so (college scouts) are here for a lot of guys. A lot of schools have spoken to him, or spoken to us about him, but at the end of the day, Brandon was solidly committed to SMU. He gave his word that he was going to SMU, that’s where he’s going.
Brandon’s a great athlete. He plays basketball, as well, and he can run, he can jump, he can dunk with two hands. He’s not going to play basketball this year, and we miss him. But at the end of the day, we didn’t want to see him get hurt, and we always have the athlete’s best interest at heart.
