SMU football head coach Chad Morris announced his third recruiting class Wednesday.

Included among the signees are three transfers: quarterback D.J. Gillins, of Jacksonville, Fla., started his college career at Wisconsin before spending a year at Pearl River (Miss.) Community College on his way to Dallas, while tight end Raymond Epps of Indianapolis signed with SMU after graduating from Arizona State and defensive end Tyeson Neals earned first-team JC All-America honors at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Ten of the Mustangs’ signees are defensive players: five defensive linemen, one linebacker and four defensive backs. On the offensive side, Gillins and freshman Austin Upshaw give the Ponies two new signal callers, and will be joined in the backfield by speedster Kayce Medlock at running back. Epps replenishes the tight ends after the graduation of Jeremiah Gaines, while converted quarterback Tyler Page and late addition Judah Bell will bolster the Mustangs’ stable of receivers.

Three incoming Mustangs — Page, Gillins and defensive end Toby Ndukwe — are working their way back from season-ending injuries, while Gillins and McQueen have enrolled early and will begin learning the SMU systems in the spring semester.
