Strengths as a Player

Jordan Gipson is a tough, versatile defensive lineman with the athletic ability and intelligence to play multiple positions. While he will get stronger as he gets in SMU's weight program and matures, he's a sturdy lineman who usually does a nice job keeping his pads low, getting underneath blockers, and is at his best against the run.

Interviews

Bay City head coach Guadalupe Flores on Jordan Gipson:

Jordan has got a really good nose for the football. We used him mostly as a defensive end. We play a “moving 3-4” — you might call it an old-school “50” defense, and Jordan was what we call our “straight tackle,” but this year, he’s more of a “five technique.” Our defensive line’s job is to protect our linebackers so they can run to the ball, and demand double-teams. Jordan does a good job of that. When we (coaches) got here, he was pretty raw, but he has the skill set and athletic ability to be a good player. He’s a big kid who can run. He’s somewhere around 240 now, but last year, he played bigger, close to 260. He trimmed down over the offseason, though, and has good straight-line speed, so we played him some at defensive end, too. We evaluate on the Rhodes Index, which is a combination of height, weight, power clean, bench press, squat, pro agility (shuttle), 40(-yard dash), vertical jump and the 300(-meter) shuttle, and Jordan was No. 1 on the whole team.”

He’s a good gap-control guy. Does he have improvement to make? Absolutely, but he also has the work ethic to do it, and he’s smart enough to do it. He’s great controlling his gap. He gets off the ball, and he gets off the ball quick. He’s going to win the first two steps, and that’s hard for the offensive linemen to deal with.

We had a lot of other schools come in to see him, but once they hear that SMU has offered him, and how committed he is, they backed off.

Archie McDaniel and Chad Morris have strong ties to Bay City. Once Jordan got up there to see the campus, I think he had never seen anything so nice. That’s why he doesn’t have more offers, because he committed, and once one of our players commits, we take them off the market. We talk about class and integrity and total effort, and if that’s what we’re going to sell, and a kid gives a school his word, nobody else is going to talk to him through us.

He’s a dang good guy and a dang good football player. He’s what you want out of most of your kids, on and off the field.

Jordan Gipson on why he chose SMU:

Coach Mac (Archie McDaniel) and Coach Morris both have a history in Bay City, so I felt comfortable with them right away. I felt like they were honest with me, and they recruited me early. They wanted me to be there, and that meant a lot to me. Some other schools talked to my (high school) coach about me, but I knew SMU was where I wanted to be.

Coach Mac started recruiting me first. I don't know what it is about him, but it's like we had a bond right away — I felt like I had known him for a long time.

I've got an uncle who's 6-4 or 6-5, so I might still grow a little bit. I'm going to work hard to get as strong as I can and be in shape when I get there, because (the coaches) said that I'll have a chance to compete for playing time next year. They didn't promise anything. It's up to me.
