Strengths as a Player

Austin Upshaw is a smart, versatile player with extraordinary athleticism and bloodlines. He turns heads with his exceptional running ability, but has a better arm than many assume for a "running quarterback" and takes care of the ball, throwing just five interceptions all season. He is particularly dangerous when he rolls out of the pocket. A true dual-threat quarterback, Upshaw can extend plays with his legs, and once he gets into open space, he throws well on the run or he can tuck the ball and take off upfield. He also is a tough player; not only does he absorb a lot of hits because he runs so much, but he dislocated a finger on his left (non-throwing) hand and didn't miss any time.

Interviews

Austin Upshaw on why he chose SMU:

I just realized that SMU is the best place to better myself, as a player and as a man. Going to SMU means a great education, and that was very important, and the football team is on the rise.

It was tough to call the Memphis coaches and tell them I had changed my mind, and I switched pretty late in the recruiting process. But I wanted to stay in Texas — I live about 30 minutes outside of Houston, and I have family all around Dallas.

Giving up baseball wasn't as hard. I love baseball, but football has always been my true passion.

When I first met Coach McDaniel, the first thing was that I felt like he was honest, and you don't always get that, because some coaches tell you what they think you want to hear. Coach Mac never did that.

The (SMU) offense really isn't that different than what I ran (at La Porte). They have different terminology for everything, so I've got to learn that, but the way the offenses work isn't that different.
