Strengths as a Player

Tyeson Neals is, above all else, an effective pass rusher (he had 12 sacks in 2016, along with 9 tackles for loss in NEO’s 3-4 defense). At SMU, where he will have three seasons of eligibility, he is expected to play the “Leo” defensive end spot that plays closer to the boundary. He had minor shoulder surgery after the 2016 season on his labrum, but fully expects to return to 100 percent effectiveness.

Interviews

Tyeson Neals on why he chose SMU:

Coach Loepp and Coach Wyatt contacted me first, and I really liked them both right away. I got the sense right away that you can trust them. Some coaches sound like they’re “selling” you something, but you can tell these guys want you. They’re honest.

I’ve got three years to play, and they said they want me to come in and make an impact right away, so that’s what I hope to do.

I’m going to try to add a few pounds before I get there. I’ve got to get my upper body stronger. I rely a lot on speed here, but I know that at the Div. I level, the tackles are big and fast, so I’m going to have to get stronger.
