Strengths as a Player

Ar’Mani Johnson likes to use get on the line of scrimmage and play physically against wide receivers. While he doesn’t go for the Kam Chancellor-type of violent hits, his speed, length allow him to run with receivers and he has good hands, allowing him to either pick off passes or at least make a play on the ball, and if a pass is completed, he is a sure tackler who will only improve as he gets stronger.

Interviews

Ar'Mani Johnson on why he chose SMU:

Out of my offers, SMU has by far the best education. I really liked talking to Coach Morris and Coach Malone, and I like the process of what Coach Morris is doing with that program. I first met them when I went up there on Junior Day, and I knew SMU was the place that would better me as a player and as a person.

(Malone) knows what he’s doing. He points out what his guys are doing wrong, and he knows how to correct it. He’s very energetic, and he brings a lot of excitement and energy. He played, so he’ll act it out for you, show you what you should have done. It’s obvious how much he loves the game.

(Recruiting visit host) Christian (Davis) talked about the everyday parts of being at SMU. He talked about dorm life, how you never get hungry at SMU, how they take good care of you. He talked about the medical staff — they have a great training room — and we talked about how many DBs are there, how many are coming back. We also talked about workouts — they’re going to be really hard.

I got to meet (strength) Coach Tru (Trumain Carroll) when I went on my tour. When we got into the gym, Coach Tru explained how they do things different than we do (in high school) — not just lifting, but nutrition, too. He talked about how much the right nutrition changes everything in your workouts. The example he gave was Courtland Sutton, who looks like a linebacker now. He’s huge.

The coaches said nobody’s spot is safe, and I liked that. I’m going to put in the work over the summer to go in and compete. I know I’ve got to get bigger, and I will, but until I do, I’ve got to focus on corner things.
