Strengths as a Player

Turner Coxe’s biggest strengths are his quickness and agility, and the versatility that allows him to play multiple positions across the defensive line; at SMU (he is the son, grandson and nephew of SMU graduates), he is expected to line up either directly over the center or on the outside shoulder of the offensive guard. He will get stronger as he matures and takes part in SMU’s strength and conditioning program, but he already uses his hands well and delivers a powerful blow to blockers, sometimes knocking them off balance on his way to the ball carrier.

Interviews

Turner Coxe on why he chose SMU:

Ever since I was really young, I remember going to SMU games and having a blast, and hoping that one day I could be out on that field. I live about five minutes away, so I have seen the campus a lot, and I really like it. With my mom and her family all going there, I grew up knowing about SMU and what a great school it is, and when this opportunity came up, it just seemed like a great opportunity.

They (family) didn’t lean on me to pick SMU — they would have been supportive no matter where I went. But they’re really happy for me.

I have been told by doctors that I’m going to be about 6-5. I still have some growth plates open, so I guess I have some more growing ahead of me.

Obviously (the SMU coaches) want me to get bigger and stronger, but they said they’re not ruling (playing as a freshman) out. They said I would be given a shot to compete, to see how I do. If not, I’ll redshirt, but I’m going to see how things go in workouts.

Mitchell Kaufman went to my high school, and I know he really likes it at SMU. He’s a couple of years older than I am, but I kind of know him, and it’s going to be good to have someone I know there.
