No. 15 Men's soccer draws Wake Forest, drops shootout, awaits NCAA bid

DALLAS (SMU) — No. 15 SMU Men's Soccer fell in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship quarterfinals on a penalty kick shootout against Wake Forest, Sunday.

The match ended in a 2-2 tie after 90 minutes and two ten-minute overtime halves, taking the Mustangs to their first penalty kick shootout since the 2020 season.

Wake Forest won the shootout 5-4 after both teams took six penalty kick attempts.

The Mustangs' two goals in regulation were scored by Bailey Sparks and Jaylinn Mitchell. Sparks scored his eighth goal of the season while Mitchell scored his third.

How It Happened

The Mustangs and Demon Deacons tussled to take momentum at the start of the match.

Despite several attacking sequences from both teams the scoreline remained 0-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half started with Wake Forest on the front foot, but the Mustangs' defense stopped the Deacs' numerous offensive efforts.

Sparks opened the scoring in the 60th minute to give SMU the lead with a rebound off Mitchell's blocked shot.

Mitchell did not take long to double the Mustangs' lead. He drove through the right wing and played a one-two with Enzo Panozzo before scoring a goal in the 67th minute.

The goal was Mitchell's third of the season and the assist was Panozzo's first for SMU.

The Demon Deacons responded just over 10 minutes after Mitchell's goal as Cooper Flax scored from a direct free kick in the 78th minute.

Wake Forest's Ryan Belal scored the equalizer in the 81st minute.

The scoreline was tied at 2-2 at the full-time whistle and the match was headed to overtime with a golden goal rule.

The overtime saw multiple goal-scoring chances from both teams, but two ten-minute overtime halves were not enough to determine a winner. The match had to go into a penalty kick shootout.

Wake Forest edged the Mustangs 5-4 after six penalty kick attempts. SMU was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of their first ACC Championships campaign.

Other Notes

SMU continues its scoring streak to make it 38 consecutive matches with one or more goals.

Mitchell scored a goal and made an assist for his first multi-goal contribution match on an SMU shirt.

Sparks scored his second open-play goal of the season. He has eight goals and six assists this season.

Panozzo made his first assist for SMU.

The last time SMU played two overtime halves was in 2021 when they tied No. 8 Tulsa 0-0 (10/27).
