PonyFans.com PRACTICE REPORT: Aug. 10, 2013

• Head coach June Jones sounds as if he and new OL coach Wes Suan have a pretty good idea of who will fill which position across the offensive line, but as is the case in any season, they are working to sort out the backups across the line. To that end, the team used a lot of different combinations of players at different positions, with extensive repetitions being given to young (probable backup) players.
• The defense had a good day in team (11 on 11) drills. LB Randall Joyner, S A.J. Justice and S Hayden Greenbauer were among those who came up with interceptions.
• For those old enough to remember, there has to be a
Spencer: For Hire joke here somewhere (for those who are drawing a blank, that was a TV show in the mid-1980s): at one point, the Mustangs rolled out a defensive line that featured DE Jarrett Spencer, NT Spencer Hollie and DE Spencer Conley.
• When a defensive lineman shot through the line during team (11 on 11) drills on a free path to the quarterback, G Sam Rice was told to get off the field. As it turns out, it wasn’t because Rice blew a blocking assignment, and despite his wobbly walk to the sideline, it also was not because of an injury. Instead, Rice blew out a shoe.
• Among those who watched Saturday’s practice: former SMU All-America CB Russell Carter (who looks like he still could suit up and play), and former OLs Blake McJunkin and Sean Lobo.
McJunkin said he has high hopes for Rice, his apparent heir apparent at right guard. McJunkin said Rice is a very good athlete who is smart and tough, and “has a screw loose — in a good way. You want that (in an offensive lineman). You want someone who wants to dominate the guy in front of him, and Sam wants to.”
