Your point is well taken; but we're dealing with two different sets of rules - the NFL's and the NCAA's. Unfortunately for Williams, he has lost on both counts.
The NFL eligibility issue ( Clarett v. NFL ) has already been thoroughly addressed in this forum and others. As for the NCAA eligibility ...

Re: Question for Sports Law
GP did a great job of explaining the issues. As has become the case far too often, it appears that what we have here is a situation of shooting the messenger. SI didn't go to the topless club, SI didn't show the poor judgement of putting itself in a position to violate the ethics clause of a ...

Re: New article from SportsLaw
Thanks to all for the kind comments. No official word yet on what came out of the ACC's conference call today. But there's lots of talk about UVA not casting the deciding vote, which raises the heat on Duke and UNC to make this happen (if it does). It will be interesting to see how all this plays ...

Re: ? for Sports Law (re: Neuheisel)
Disclosure: I am a graduate of UT undergrad ('81) and U of Houston law school ('85).
It IS pretty embarrassing for the attorney to not have run the conflict check before the meeting. To be fair, though, maybe there was a previous relationship between the attorney and Neuheisel and an ...

Re: ? for Sports Law (re: Neuheisel)
Stallion stated it correctly. My take on it is that the attorney that Neuheisel brought with him had previously represented UW and UW would not waive the "conflict" (meaning the lawyer has a relationship [current or previous] with both parties to the issue in dispute - regardless of whether or not ...

Re: need for a regional conference
Well, I've been laying back and briefly looking at some (but not nearly all) of the "excited utterances" about what the future landscape holds. I will admit that I haven't been terribly focused on the topic (mainly because there will likely be little to no impact on UT - my undergrad alma mater) and ...

Re: More trouble
As OldPony said, there is an NCAA rule (though its not against the law) against selling items that a student-athlete receives. I'm not sure if the rule limits it to "above cost" or not; because, whether or not that happens, the athlete received the item because of their participation in collegiate ...

Re: Question for SportsLaw
Thanks for the thought. That's one of many suggestions that I've received.
Title IX is a very complex issue on which well meaning, reasonable people can have dramatically different views. While we might delve deeper into the topic at some point, the bottom line can often be summarized as follows ...

Thanks for the question and sorry for the late reply -

Re: Question for Sports Law guy
The short answer is: Yes, they have to retain their own attorney and, yes, they have to pay for that attorney themselves. If the university or a booster or someone else retains the attorney or the attorney provides his/her services for free, then that could (and likely would) be considered an "Extra ...

Re: Question for SportsLaw
Glad you liked the article! By the way, congratulations and good luck to both Kevin Garrett and John Hampton.
