I agree with all this and declare victory.
Stanley on TV was used as information to START an investigation. Stanley not talking to NCAA meant no usable evidence.
I'll go further...look up Laura Miller's DMN expose of UT in 1986...she got 28 players to admit to her that they received cash, gifts ...

Re: When does the hammer come down on Baylor and TCU?
Stallion...I did not make a moral statement...I made a factual statement. Read the 1987 NCAA report...we self investigated...and the NCAA sanctioned us solely on our own report. They did reference a media report that caused them to ask us what was going on. Fact.

Re: When does the hammer come down on Baylor and TCU?
The Death Penalty did not come down because of self reporting.
Yes it did.
All the breathless reporting from WFAA on David Stanley was not included in NCAA report because Stanley wouldn't talk to the NCAA. Despite the media reports...it was treated as a rumor by NCAA.

I disagree...
Seems many times sanctions are just for show...many other times they are a warning...sometimes it's to derail you.

Re: Scholarship Reduction
The NCAA rule is written to apply to all players who transfer from any school on probation when the player will lose his last chance for post season eligibility. The rule isn't baiting or targeting SMU or Larry Brown in any way. Plus the number of coaching probations/sanctions of Head Coaches ...

Re: Scholarship Reduction
The idea of seniors transferring either mid-first semester or during winter break is really weird to me. Not saying it won't happen. . .because after all this is SMU and the next piece of bad news is always right around the corner. But how many schools even accept senior transfers mid-school year ...

Only players who forfeit their FINAL year of eligibility due to the post season ban are eligible to transfer under a special transfer rule

Re: Shots Fired (Players Issue Statement to NCAA)
This thing could get out of control...I thought NCAA guidelines were that any Junior or Senior could transfer without having to sit out a year if current school was on probation for remainder of their eligibility.

Re: Shots Fired (Players Issue Statement to NCAA)
Lot of good stuff in this thread...Stallion is right though...players have no standing to sue. This argument is very interesting to me though....but if SMU doesn't run with it...I don't see how players can.

Re: After 43 years, Hayden Fry and SMU reconcile
During Hayden's years, I remember UT having to stop "ticket sales" by athletes of their personal ticket allocations. The NCAA was stifled from penalizing them because it wasn't considered a violation at the time. If I recall the purchases were coordinated, and not limited to face value sales. Then ...

Re: After 43 years, Hayden Fry and SMU reconcile
The NCAA comes down harder on recruiting inducements (promises of cars cash ,merchandise, monthly payroll etc)than they do alumni $20 Dollar handshakes or employment benefits from alumni to current students. The wording they often cite is that if gave a program a competitive advantage because the ...

Re: After 43 years, Hayden Fry and SMU reconcile
There was paying players to come to your school...which was rare until the late 1970's for a lot of reasons.
And there was spreading a little money around to help the players pay for living expenses after they were already at a school. (Up until 1972 players got 'laundry money' to help out)

Re: After 43 years, Hayden Fry and SMU reconcile
Do not start to believe we were clean in Hayden's tenure.
Yeah...a bit of revisionist history. Hayden was invited to leave in 1972 by new SMU President Paul Hardin (who was an NCAA believer) who found out Hayden was spreading it around a bit.
This made selected boosters mad and we then fired ...

Re: With Margus Hunt, it's almost like 'starting over again'
We'll see, would think this is his make or break year. He's already been coached up, full time, by NFL guys for 2 years. With another off-season, training camp & pre-season I'm sure he realizes it's time to perform or expect to be cut.
