Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
Someone has quite an imagination. Fry was fired because after ten years he only had two winning records. It was decided to terminate him at the end of the 1971 season but since Willis Tate was retiring it was recided to wait until the new president was in office and fire him after the 72 season.

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
Fry was quite a talker and perhaps his best effort as head coach was luring good assistant coaches to SMU. He seemed to have that same facility at later jobs at N Texas and Iowa. His problem at SMU was that he often had difficulty taking advice from his assistants. I remember that Fry did not like ...

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
Unless I am mistaken, Dave Smith did not "sneak" out of Junction. He was there for most of the camp but it was clear that he did not fit into Bryant's plans for a QB that could be a runner first as well as throw. Dave was not a running QB. I believe that Dave Smith was the one who stood up to Bryant ...

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
It is absolutely not true that Broyles was considered for the job when Rusty Russell got it. It is true that Broyles was in the running when Meek was hired.
Of course I was prejudiced because Dave Smith and I were good friends but I liked the uniforms he picked. He was kind of ahead of his times in ...

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
There is no question that the culture of the SWC began to change in the mid late 50s. Prior to that time, it was a rather relaxed atmoshere and coaches like Bell, Meyer and Neely could successfully recruit enough good players to compete with the state schools. Royal and Bryant changed that culture ...

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
I agree that it is probably not true that Broyles foisted Fry onto SMU for ulterior reasons but some believed that was the case. If SMU had hired Broyles instead of Meek it would have probably changed history. SMU was still getting very good recruits in those days and Broyles would have more than ...

Re: The lesson of Hayden Fry at SMU
Broyles was not in the running when Fry was hired. Broyles was on the staff at Georgia Tech when Meek was hired. When Meek was hired Darrel Royal was also considered but showed little interest. Fry was an assistant under Broyles at Arkansas when Fry was hired. The story is that Mattie Bell wanted ...

"A great coach can take hisn and beat yourn and take yourn and beat hisn." (Bum Phillips) and Bill Snyder at K State is a good example.

Re: Can we stop referring to us "running the Run n' shoot"?
The so called spread formation has been around for a long time in various forms. I played at Thomas Jefferson, San Antonio, in the early fifties and our coach, Jewel Wallace, who had played at TCU under Dutch Meyer utilized the spread sometime. I have the playbook to prove. Spreading out the ...

Re: Well, our defense isn't as bad as people think
After watching Baylor and A&M, SMU might not be quite as bad as was first thought. Too bad our offensive genius we have as head coach is still stuck back in the 20th century.

Leach uses wide splits in his O line like the old split T to create running lanes.

Re: SMU Offense
Most college offenses have a QB who can run with the ball and does by design. Without the threat of the running QB which the defense has to account for an offense is handicapped as far as the running game. The O line is handicapped further in blocking for the run by always being in the stand up ...
