Aggies next opponent no lightweight any more

After Texas A&M's narrow one-point season-opening loss on the road to Clemson, it seemed as if the Aggie had two tune-up games at home in SMU and Texas State to get ready for the Big 12 conference slate.

SMU redshirt freshman DeMyron Martin accounted for all three Mustang touchdowns in their 21-10 win over TCU.
But SMU put a wrench in those plans when they beat No. 22 TCU last weekend at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas 21-10.

It was the first win against a ranked opponent for the Mustangs since 1986 when they beat No. 13 Baylor.

The Horned Frogs were coming into the annual Metroplex rivalry with a big 17-10 road win over previously No. 7 Oklahoma under their belt, but SMU took control early and pushed to a 14-3 halftime lead.

"We didn't play well enough to win," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "That's the way it goes."

SMU redshirt freshman DeMyron Martin stole the show Saturday night as he ran for two touchdowns and caught another to account for every Mustang touchdown in the game.

Martin gained 118 yards on the ground on 26 carries and caught two passes for 30 yards.

"DeMyron had never been in a game before tonight and he came in and hit the holes so hard," said SMU senior quarterback Jerad Romo. "There were times when guys would hit him at the line of scrimmage and he would get away and get about eight yards. I was proud of him. He had a great game and he showed a lot of people that he can play."

Romo was 11 of 21 passing for 101 yards and one touchdown without throwing an interception, but it was SMU's defense that held the Horned Frogs to no offensive touchdowns in the game and only one field goal.

Leading the defensive unit was senior defensive back Jamey Harper who picked off TCU quarterback Tye Gunn twice. Senior Alvin Nnabuife added another in the game.

"(Senior linebacker D.D. Lee) helped me a lot on my first pick," Harper said. "He was in the passing lane and it enabled me to just read it and step in front of it. The pressure up front was big as well. Having everybody healthy is the big difference this year. Everybody is back now and things are clicking."

The win was the first time in seven year that the Mustangs have beaten TCU, gaining them control of the Iron Skillet, the trophy awarded to the winner of the annual rivalry.

But now the Mustangs have a much more daunting task in front of them as they will travel to College Station to face another former SWC rival in Texas A&M (0-1) at Kyle Field.

SMU has already played a Big 12 opponent this season, losing 28-23 to Baylor in Dallas, and whether the team that shows up is the one resembling the one that pummeled TCU or lost to Baylor is up in the air.

Either way, the Aggies might have a better opponent coming into Kyle than previously thought.

"I want to talk about our day, not just my day, because it was a total team effort," Martin said. "We showed anyone that was doubting us that we are a much improved football team."
