A new Wrinkle in the Offense

THere is a play I would like to see in our offense. Its based off a play that I heard about from Texas coaching legend Gordon Wood. I would like to see one time when the QB turns to the sideline to look for the play have the center direct snap the ball to the RB. Everytime we turn to look the defensive linemen, in the TCU game at least, would drop to a knee. It might be good for a few yards and it would probably only work once every game of two, but it would force the d-line to pay attention a little more and sap some energy. Coach Wood said he ran the play but he would have his QB under center and then come out from center and walk towards the sideline and try to "talk" to the coach, he said the main problem was warning the referees not to stop paying attention also. This is just something I would like to see.

that is a very good idea... the biggest thing is that it would force the d line to stay in a 3 point stance most of the game..

can you imagine staying in a three point stance for 20 secs x 60 plays and then firing off and being in the trenches for 60-70 plays in this heat..

that is what makes the no huddle effective it makes the d line stay in there stance and takes away the ability to substitute on the defense

I was thinking of posting almost the exact same thing. I saw the Rams do it once live... they were playing Niners on a Monday night... Warner was under center, stood up and walked towards the sidelines in a disgusted man - ripped off his chin guard (it looked like he was about to call timeout), and then the ball snapped right into Faulk's awaitng hands. He sauntered into the endzone untouched.

It's so intriguing that we were thinking the same thing... wow.

That would be a lot of fun to run......once we are not making the mental mistakes we currently are. I don't think we are a team that could pull this off just yet.....maybe in a few years if we really have been improving as everyone says that we have, and we continue to do so.

I would even be happy with calling a pass play and knowing before hand that if its complete we are going to get to the ball and run the read option. Just a way to get moving and keep the defense in a stance as long as possible and interfere with substitutions.

I’ve seen the play run in the NFL, except I think the QB was walking down the line of scrimmage as if he were trying to communicate with his WR (they were playing on the road and the crowd was loud). The ball was snapped and the QB ran out into a route – it was a pass play. I don’t think it worked but it is really a very low-risk “trick play” if you run the ball using this approach.

I would call that play on 4th and 4 when you really need that 1st down.

How about a quick punt on 3rd and forever. God knows SMU needs to punt when no one is expecting it.

SMU doesn't need to wait or "mature" to try this play. Highland Park High School runs this exact play from time to time. In the 2002 season, HP QB Bill Foran ran it at least three times during the season.

Gee so you are ready to trust the kids who can't get the snap count or blocking scheme right to try a trick play.....yeah
