Old guy taking program from nothing and doing well vs poor competition - haven't we seen that movie already?
Still waiting for him to actually win something there or at least notch a signature win. Maybe it'll happen on Thursday versus Arizona. But yeah this movie does seem strangely familiar so far.

is it better to spend a ton on a head coach or spend less on the head coach and get top assistants?

Depends who the head coach is. If we want to go the coordinator say Spavital or Lashlee we could stand a better chance at doing that. But the we could end up with an underpaid coach with overpaid assistants. We just need to hire a coach and let him pick the assistants that he knows will help him.

I hear you CA. But Butch is 60ish, been on 2 Super Bowl winning staffs, won big at the U, HC in the NFL, and turn around NC. I know about the NC scandal..... But isn't that more of an academic scandal than FB or coach related. The critics are trying to tear down all those banners at the Dean Dome more than hammer Butch.
I don't know. Butch has a reputation of having a great eye for talent ( like LB), is a made man in the profession ( like LB), has a chip on his shoulder over being fired at NC ( like LB at Charlotte), and wants to coach again - like LB. Plus he has local street cred having been big medicine with the Cowboys.
Butch and SMU Sounds like a match MADE IN HEAVEN.

By the end of this season, we will probably know what the recruiting rules will be in the future. That will probably dictate who we go after as coach. Personally, I view any kind of increased stipend for players to be an invitation for bidding wars in the future and we need to determine how much that's going to cost us for football and basketball and other women's sports (if Title IX impacts this). Once we know that, then we can figure out what's left to pay coaching staffs. We can't go cheap on player payments.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Don't know how "signature win" is defined but just went on the road and beat Houston on their opening night in their new stadium using a first time QB and many other new starters. They have a lot of seniors, but alot of them do not necessarily play, it is function of start up program. The program is only 5 years old and just last year got on campus practice fields, before that used high school borrowed, and still no big on campus facilities. We were blown out by Houston last year and we are in year 7 of June with better facilities, upgraded locker rooms, etc. No one advocating hiring Coker, but to compare him to June is laughable. He has done more with less in less amount of time. "Poor competition," he has beat or played closer to similar competition like Houston and Rice than June has if you actually look at the games. His team has won on the road. At least his teams have won or looked good against "poor competition" and won the games they should, which has not always been the case with June. They were competitive last year against OSU into 2nd half and in fact Gundy put his starter back in when they got within a couple of scores to blow lead back up and was questioned about it after the game. I totally agree if I was making the call I would go with someone younger with lots of Texas ties. I'd also hire 1 or 2 high school coaches regardless of their experience as mentioned in my other post. I'd reach out to some stud North Texas high school guys as soon as their season is over. Arizona should blow them out tonight as they are much better team with better athletes and UTSA has a QB making only his 2nd start and is a young program. I would expect an Arizona big win, but I'd also expect Coker's team will look better in defeat than we did Sunday at Baylor. The issue is UTSA is on an upward trajectory and has a plan it is working to improve and we (SMU)appear to be going downward. This is painful to some of us long time supporters as we believe and should expect it to be the other way around.

Can someone refresh my memory. . . is there zero buyout for June's K after this season?
Once we get flattened like a 15 cent sandwich against TCU and A&M (which IS going to happen for anyone still harboring delusions), and especially if we lose to UNT this weekend, I figure the only thing that could save June would be a big buyout that Hart can't find funding for. No buyout. . .let the games begin.
