If it were up to me (it isn't), I'd hire Chuck Neinas. He filled in as acting commissioner of the Big XII when they canned Dan Beebe and it looked like the Big XII was going to crater. Say what you will, he pulled that conference out of a nose dive. He is considered quite well connected and good at the job for being 80+.

You need a search firm to give Coach so and so deniability when asked if SMU contacted him. He can say "no" without lying. I hope we hire a coach well before National Signing Day this time. Back to back horrid seasons were painful to watch.
