Romo threw the ball 22 times for 150 yds. Marshall's QB threw 60 times for 300 yds. If we threw 60 times we would have had 450yds. Its not Romo thats the problem. We need someone else to step up when every opponent we face comes in keying on Romo. And we shouldn't have to rely on our QB to be the leading rusher. When the rushing game works, the passing game works too.
Exactly. We have a passing formation with a running quarterback. Other teams flood the zone and we have no way to burn them. Romo had Pellerin open at the end of regulation and missed the pass deep. A good QB hits that pass. QB isn'tt he total problem. We have major problems with the o-line. Romo is a gamer, but he just isn't a high quality QB. With a solid o-line, our running backs would be successful. I think we have the WRs to be decent in the passing game. But even with a great o-line, I don't know that Romo would be totally successful in the passing game. Adequate at best.
I am having a real problem with the Burns offense. For instance, they called a slant over the middle early in the game. Chase was wide open and the ball hit him in the hands full stride. He dropped it. That is a receiver problem, not a play call problem. The play was wide open for the taking but was never used again the whole day. Why not. I would have come right back to it. It is almost like he has a list of plays for the entire game drawn up in order with no consideration for down or distance. He is going to run them in order no matter what the situation. We have runs up the middle on 3rd and 8. Deep passes on 3rd and short. 1 yard passes on 3rd and 5. I must admit it is not predictable, just bad.
I thought the same thing about that slant to Chase. Why don't we see that more often? Why aren't we looking to get Kennedy and even Vincent Chase involved in this offense? Use the middle of the field once in a while!
Despite the fact we aren't connecting on the home run ball, today Pellerin got open deep and Romo missed him. In each game (remember Columbus Givens), we've been able to get someone behind the defense and we need to continue looking downfield and stretching the defense...more than once each week. I'd also like to see us line up the M&M boys in the I on 1st down or in short yardage situations. Massey is showing he could be a good lead blocker and Martin has shown he can take advantage of any crease. I'd also like to see what our fat boys on the OL (I say that affectionately) could do from a 3 point stance. I'm not happy with the Burns offense, either. We are playing in CUSA, not the Big XII. How 'bout let's line up and play a little smash mouth football once in a while?
