I honestly don't think it would really expand our candidate pool all that much.

SMU isn't going to get a hot shot head coach in the prime of his career right now because we can't offer a shot at the playoff. The only non-P5 conference team with a legitimate chance of getting into the playoff is Notre Dame... that might change if the playoff goes to 8 teams but it won't happen with the 4 team model.

So, even if we're willing to offer $4 million a year, we're still going to be drawing our next coach from a pool of up and coming coordinators, lower tier head coaches, and the unemployed.

There's nothing wrong with that pool of coaches - the next Nick Saban is probably a coordinator or lower tier head coach right now. It's just a matter of discovering him and getting a few years out of him before he goes on to a P5 job... or we get into a P5 conference.
