Strange year

Postby EastStang » Tue Oct 11, 2005 11:10 am

We beat TCU who is rumbling through the MWC like a freight train and beat OU at Norman.
We barely lost to Baylor who beat a good Iowa State team on the road.
We beat/lost to Marshall on the road and who rarely loses at home and should have beaten K State.
We got slaughtered by the Aggies who got whupped by Colorado and have been dubbed the underachievers of the year in the Washington Post. But we did hang in with them for a half.
We got stomped by Tulane who lost badly to Houston.

So, what do we make of our Mustangs? I think it is that we are not deep, but we are not as bad as some thought initially. We are not as good as we'd like to be. So what does the rest of the year hold? I think we could win 3-4 more games this year. Our we could lose 5.

The funny thing is that we are still in the hunt for the western division championship of CUSA. If we were to beat ECU, Rice Houston, Tulsa and UTEP (and Tulane drops one more conference game) we could be tied for first at the end of the season or even win the Division outright. I am sure we will stub our toe at least once if not five times down the stretch, but at this point in a conference with as much parity as CUSA, this thing could get interesting.

Despite perceptions and what happened last year, I don't see us beating Tulsa on the road. They have been impressive this year. Houston doesnt look very likely either to me. I actually think we have a better shot of knocking off Utep at home in the finale. My realistic hope is we take care of business at home against ECU and Rice, and then upset Utep on senior day. That would be a very respectable season with 5 wins.

at this point, i am simply hoping we beat ECU, and then we can go from there. I don't even want to think about the rest of the season yet.

ECU and RICE are MUST-WINS for the season...everything else is up in the air.

None of these teams will be easy Ws for us. I don't have a good handle on ECU. They are probably a team we can beat but who knows which SMU team will show up--the one that beat TCU and UAB or the one that lost to Baylor, A$M and Tulane. I think however that the guys might be coming together so I hope we play to win and beat ECU. To me the real key is Rice. If we beat them (assuming we beat ECU) then I think we could do some damage in the western C-USA, at least as a spoiler. Tulsa, UofH and UTEP are all probably better than us so it is unlikely that we will win the western C-USA. We might beat one of those teams but it would be an upset.

I have a feeling that the loss of Eckert will be the catalyst to get this team moving. While I feel for Eckert and his family and hope he can get a medical redshirt for next year, the fact that Romo is now indisputably the quarterback appears to have given him the confidence to take control of the offense. I have always hated the two quarterback system that Bennett has promoted and believe that his indecisiveness in picking a starting QB and sticking with him has been a major reason that the offense has consistently underperformed during his tenure. I think that it would be best if Bennett forget the backups for a couple of games to give Romo a chance to establish himself as the leader. If he can't get it done after a couple of games, then it is time to see if Philips has what it takes to takeover as the primary quarterback for next year.

I hope Romo stays healthy. I fear that Bennett will play Willis ahead of Phillips even though technically Phillips was listed as the #2 at UAB. With only 5 games games left in the season I would much rather have Phillips play if Romo comes out. Willis as a 5th year senior is an exciting thought.

I whole-heartedly agree. Wasting Willis' redshirt year, this late in the season, would not make any sense to me. The only positive is that Johnson would be uncontested as the main quarterback that last year. It is my understanding that he also has a lot of promise.
