Wildcat Option W/ Matt Davis?

Postby StallionsModelT » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:55 am

I think we can all agree that one of the few bright spots from last season was Matt Davis' ability to make plays with his feet. I'm not optimistic that Davis can be a consistent throwing QB, but he has more than enough raw talent to get on the field for us next year in some capacity.

Maybe the best way to get him on the field is some kind of red zone "Wildcat" package that makes the most out of his natural ability. We could even put a pretty powerful skill group on the field with the following:

QB - Matt Davis (6-0 210)
RB - Daniel Gresham (5-10 230)
RB - Xavier Jones/K.C. Nmelchi
WR - Kevin Thomas (6-2 180)
WR - Courtland Sutton (6-4 210)
TE - Jeremiah Gaines (6-2 240)

That gives us a true running threat at QB, a plus option at FB/RB in Gresham, a true tailback in either Jones or Nmelchi, two big "go up and get it" type of wideouts in Thomas and Sutton, and a legit TE/H-Back in Gaines.

It'll be interesting to see how we plan to utilize Matt Davis. The kid is too talented not to be on the field in some capacity. In Morris I trust.
Back off Warchild seriously.

There will be some interesting formations for fans next year, however, it all starts with the bigs in front. Those are the guys that can help us in the Red Zone. I hope we can start roping in some big talented OLs next recruiting year. Are there any JC big men worth bringing to SMU next fall?

Well there's still 3 spots left so who knows, maybe even a couple of transfers after spring ball?

I think morris liked the bodies he had on the line and just figured he could coach them into being productive and that the skills positions needed the biggest boost. I'd like to think next years class will be much more offensive and defensive line oriented

The Wildcat is the best way to get him on the field? Really?

Isn't it premature to take the starting job away from him? With Cassel gone and Burcham hurt, he and Krstich are the the only QBs on the roster with any college experience, and if Clemson recruited him, isn't it safe to say Morris will give him every chance to just earn the starting job?

That said, I agree about wanting him on the field.

Given that he's essentially an RB playing QB the Wildcat is definitely the best way to use him on the field. BTW the starting job doesn't belong to anyone right now.

The genius of the spread offense is that it allows coaches to maximize results based upon talent available (that is why it is so popular in Texas HS). In particular, it allows you to be flexible with your QB play. Look at Clemson: when Watson was available, his mobility was a massive weapon and Morris used it. When Stoudt had to play, Morris changed up is play calls to deal with the fact Stoudt is not a great runner.

June's biggest problem at SMU was inflexibility at QB. If they QB couldn't run the "right" plays, he couldn't play -> period. If the starter got injured, we were screwed because none of the backups were every ready.

In Morris system, he is going to try to call the "right" plays for the QB in the game. Best of all, the "right" plays will vary by QB. I predict Davis will thrive in the new system and Hicks will be a solid backup.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!

take out the extra RB and replace him with a WR and that's an awesome skills player line up. Davis' athleticism will open up room in the passing game. I think Davis will take the starting job and Morris will run his offense the way he prefers. Whenever Hicks is in the game the schematics will be tweaked, forcing defenses to account for a scrambling qb and a pocket passer.
