I was at that game my freshman year. Fun times. Had somehow almost forgotten about it.

Here's my recollection from an old post:

I remember when a SMU fan jumped out of the stands at Ford, stole a Nevada helmet (that some player had put down and walked away from) and ran onto the field to "help" Nevada's defense slow down a 28 pt 3rd quarter Mustang onslought back when we both were in the WAC. Jared Romo had no idea what to do and stood there stunned until they guy was thrown out by security, but still one of the funniest SMU football moments I've experienced.

The other funny thing that happened that game was that the head coach (I believe Chris Ault-CF HoFer) was yelling at his offense to execute the "toss pass"--which was a play that we'd never heard of/found amusing and so we began imploring their offense to execute the "toss pass" too. We were so loud and interruptive during their huddles that their head coach finally got [deleted] and kindly asked "DO YOU GUYS EVEN KNOW WHAT THE F*CKING TOSS PASS IS!?!" We admitted we had no idea and asked him to show us. That was pretty funny too.

I was standing next to SMUer, on the same row, but a few people down from Nevada's12thman. The helmet belonged to a bench warmer that we had been giving a hard time to for most of the game. He'd finally had enough and went to the other side of their bench away from us.

The toss pass incident wasn't with Chris Ault, it was Barry Sacks, the co-D coordinator/DBs coach. (He's now at New Mexico.) He was yelling at the DBs to "look for the toss pass," referring to the SMU offensive.

So he's going on and on, and I yell, "Yeah, look for the toss pass!" which is when he looked up at me — we made eye contact — and he yells back "Do you even know what that means, f*ck-face?"

The old Daily Campus article recapping the game is still online. As I recall (I was the DC's photo editor at the time), the pic of Nevada's12thman getting escorted out of the stadium was on page 1.
