Timeouts

Postby docabel » Sun Sep 27, 2015 12:11 am

I don't think I'm alone in feeling that HCCM still has a learning curve on managing his timeouts. That being said, I have a couple of questions?

1. On the fateful last drive, JMU had a pass for about 8 yards over the middle and the clock should have kept running, but the JMU player stayed down with an injury. JMU did not call timeout, but the clock was stopped. Shouldn't they have been charged a time out in order for the clock to stop?

2. Just after that play, WHY did we call timout when JMU was running around confused on offense and about to take a delay of game, or at worst need to use one of their timeouts?

3. With around a minute and change, we did call timeout after an out of bounds play. We can argue all day about the merits of calling a timeout to let your defense rest/regroup in that situation.

All that being said, we should have had at minimum TWO timeouts and arguably THREE. Having at least one of those additional time outs drastically changes how we could approach that final desperation drive, opening up the middle of the field when all we needed was a field goal.

1) yes they should have been charged

2) I have no idea, we saved them.

The biggest thing is that they made huge plays after we called the timeouts, so none of them were effective.

Coach Morris definitely needs to fix his clock management issues. We have had issues with it in every game and that is on him. This is his first time being a head coach in college, but he needs to learn from it and get it fixed fast.

Just brutal to not have those two timeouts for the final drive.

Better recruits = less reason to care about clock management.

Using those timeouts to make adjustments or changes is one thing, but we didn't appear to do anything but give JMU time to come up with a play. Which they did.

My biggest problem with it was that it was pretty apparent that they would likely score. If I'm calling that shot I'm not trusting my defense to win but I'd be pleasantly surprised. Hind sight is 20/20 but offense has been your strength all game so give them all the tools the need to win it on the last drive. Having 3 timeouts vs 1 changes play calling drastically
