Re: Doak WalkerHeard it was wood shop.
Re: Doak WalkerMet him while a kid in the mid 1960s, when he was back in town for a visit. He had a sporting goods shop on Lovers Lane down from HPHS, and was in the store on the afternoon my mom took me there. Come to find out she knew him well, as well as his first wife. Mom was a stewardess for Branniff in 1947, and hung out with Doak, his wife to be, Audie Murphy, a veritable crew of who's who in Dallas at the time.
I remember him as a very gracious man, who took the time to kneel down and ask about my life, my shoe size, and whether I liked sports. I also remember him talking for some time with my mother and I, and giving me an autograph (still have it, although I didn't treasure it then, as I do now) I recall my mom saying to me that I would remember him, and that he was a star player for SMU, the school that my dad would take me to see play in the Cotton Bowl. My dad was 6'5, and I was struck by the fact that he wasn't as big as my dad. He WAS broad shouldered, and still trim, dressed in a suit. Circa 1965-66ish. stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Re: Doak WalkerGreatness. I remember getting my first football uniform at Doak Walker's, guessing his son was running it in the 80's.
Re: Doak WalkerMy Pappa had some stories. He'd be 107 this year.
My family knows Audie Murphy family members. My dad died last year but he often was visited by one of Audie's sisters.
