My oldest son is 10 years old, a very demanding and peer-pressure-driven age in terms of what you expect from your sports heroes. Since the entire world it seems is crazy about the Longhorns, he is too. Wants to wear Vince Young jerseys, wants burnt orange underwear for all I can tell. And when I mention SMU, he gets this polite but bothered look on his face before saying that the Mustangs are his "second favorite team." But he just does that for me. It's damnation by faint praise.
At least before the UAB game. After Bobby Chase's catch to win the game, he made the announcement that maybe SMU could play after all, that there was some room in his heart for the Ponies. And after the UTEP game and Chase's bobbling catch and recatch, he's done a complete 180. Bobby Chase has secured a handwritten-in-a-Sharpie spot on his school notebook. And he wants to be #82 for Halloween. I think I'll be #8.

My immediate suggestion to you is, stop by Acadamy, pick up a football, get a Sharpie, stop by the athletic department and get Bobby Chase to autograph the ball. Wrap it in a box and put it under the tree.

Great idea, DM75. If he opens a present that has a ball signed to him by his new favorite player, he'll be in the seats at Ford for the rest of his life!

bobby is an incredible young man and would go at any length to help out... getting his autograph should be no problem, possibly in person so your son could have a little interaction. Knowing PB he is a man who emphasizes his players making an impact on the community in a positive way, generating excitement for the SMU football program is just an added benefit....

Last year, Bobby Chase came down into the bandhall during a Mustang Band rehearsal and said that he "just wanted to thank everyone for being so supportive on gamedays". Small gesture, but it went along way. My first year in the band, I remember some players (walk-on types) who gave me grief about why "the band keeps playing even when we're losing, that's just disrespectful". I almost said "if that were the case, then we'd NEVER get to play", but I bit my tongue.
Hats off to Bobby Chase!

All right, stupid question. What is the athletic building? Is it the complex on the northwest side of Ford?
BTW, thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestion!
