As suck'em as we've been over the past 25 years (ranked #112 out of 119 schools), Memphis is right there with us (ranked #95 out of 119 schools).
Yet there name keeps getting bantered about while SMU is virtually non-existent.
People only remember what happened in the last 5 years. Before that never occurred.

I think the thing that will always hold Memphis back from getting an invite to a P5 conference is actually their academic reputation or lack thereof. I don't think any P5 conference wants to be the one to take a school that is so bad that they get a "Rank Not Published" from US News on an annual basis.

I don't think any athletic conference actually cares about academics. Sounds like a nice talking point though.

I think the conferences care about academics nominally... I could be dead wrong but, all things equal, I don't see any P5 conference adding a program at a really bad school unless said really bad school brought something big to the table... and Memphis brings nothing "big" to the table - absolutely no tradition or even proven ability to sustain any success in football, their basketball program hasn't been all that good since Calipari left, and the Memphis media market isn't all that attractive (and anyone who knows the area knows that interest in Memphis athletics in Tennessee drops to 0 by the time you get about 20 miles outside of Memphis... and it can be legitimately argued that they aren't even the program with the most fans in the area - Tennessee fans almost certainly outnumber Memphis fans and I'd wager that there are more Ole Miss fans when you look at it in terms of fans who show more than just casual support).

TCU was still in the MWC when we beat them in 2011.
Ummmmmm We tied the Aggies in San Antonio back in 1994. Absent that game, we are 0-52 against Big12 south schools (TCU included only after they joined the Big12) post DP. That's on Turner 100%.
Seriously, Turner never wrapped up on tackles and was always beat over the top for TDs. That [deleted] play cost us in more games! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Very true on many accounts. My old boss is a Memphis grad living in northern Miss and is a huge Ole Miss fan. Cares nothing about Memphis sports. Lots of people just like him who drive across the border everyday for work and don't bother with Memphis sports. Also worked with another Memphis guy and he bashed his school at every chance.

I lived in the Memphis area until I was 14 and within 40 miles of Memphis until I graduated from high school. In my experience, most people who attend the University of Memphis don't do it by choice... it's literally their only shot at a college degree from anything other than a diploma mill or community college. Memphis has grown its football fanbase in recent years but the reality is that they really only show up if they're playing Ole Miss, Tennessee, etc. Tennessee won't play them at all because Memphis thinks they're on an equal enough footing to demand a home and home. Ole Miss stupidly agreed to a home and home to get a basketball series (which was moronic regardless of the result of the last game... to be a bit brutal, G5 programs should know their place and P5 ADs shouldn't bend over just because Fred Smith wants something)... but Ole Miss has already announced that the series is over no later than 2019 unless Memphis agrees to play every game from then on in Oxford.

I hope they improve the track team for the new track. Top marks show the program is weak. It would be a good HS team. I remember seeing 1 SMU singlet at NCAA's while watching on TV. https://www.tfrrs.org/teams/1554.html

Elitist nothing. He and HarvCrimYaleBlue are right. Memphis is hoping to get in based on location, a pretty good basketball program, and a sudden uptick in football. They don't own their own facilities in a major sport and have no record of supporting football. I'm rooting for them because it's my hometown school and I attended summer school there, but in reality they have done little to nothing to better themselves.

He just sounded elitist when talking about how G5 schools should know their place. Does he realize right now SMU is G5?

Yeah, I know.
But I took it a little different, perhaps.
I've watched Memphis fans for years do nothing for their team and act like they are better than they are. It's frustrating, really, considering I went there and donate to the school. They don't go to games, don't give to the school, and expect the city of Memphis - who has already built two football stadiums and three basketball gyms for them - to subsidize their failures. I took their comments not to mean that G5 programs should simply lie down, but rather that if you don't make any effort to help your school then don't expect them to do well - and Memphis alum are not helpful to their alma mater.
But hey, maybe I'm wrong.

I agree with you. I thought he was referring to G5 programs overall. There are G5 programs that are as good as any P5 and their fans and boosters step up. Programs like Boise for example which are screwed for being in Idaho but if they were in Dallas or Houston would be worthy of a P5 invite.
