Losing a Legendary Fan

Postby SmooBoy » Mon Aug 15, 2016 11:50 am

The SMU Community lost a supreme supporter of SMU athletics and the university last week. Dr. John Swanson graduated from SMU in 1946 after serving for three years at Midway in WWII. He went on to graduate from Baylor College of Dentistry, and was one of the first dentists in DFW to accept 'colored' people as patients. A devotee of the arts, the outdoors, and world travel, he and his lovely wife, Eloise, were regulars at SMU football and basketball games for 50+ years, and gave generously to the university. RIP.

He and my father were friends through DCDS. He invited my dad to an SMU game, and dad began following the Mustangs in the late 50's and through the 60's. Indirectly, I came to follow and later attend SMU through that invitation.

May God bless his family...

Thanks, p81.

Dr. Swanson is also related to another SMU legend, Lawrence Herkimer, cheerleader extraordinaire, whose namesake Herkie Jump and innovations revolutionized modern cheerleading.
