Laying It on the Line: A Rose Bowl wager between editorial pages
05:01 AM CST on Wednesday, January 4, 2006
Why should the governors hog all the action on tonight's Rose Bowl?
In typical gubernatorial fashion, Texas' Rick Perry and California's Arnold Schwarzenegger made bets with each other to back their home teams, the UT Longhorns and USC Trojans, in the battle for college football's national championship.
Not to be excluded, the editorial boards of The Dallas Morning News and Los Angeles Times have agreed to a friendly wager, as well.
The stakes set by the governors include oodles of food, plus autographed cowboy boots to be sold for charity.
We editorial writers have decided to gamble our most treasured products, our opinions.
The loser of the bet agrees to publish an editorial listing 10 positive things about the other's state. The winner, of course, will proudly publish the competitor's high praise as well.
Like kids before Christmas, we're aflame with excitement over the possibility of erudite West Coasters helping us brag on the Lone Star State.
So, let's hear it for Texas. Hook 'em, Horns!
