Garrett to Cowboys?

Postby DallasDiehard » Mon Feb 17, 2003 2:34 pm

The more I think about it, the more this is a perfect fit, maybe in rounds 3-5 or so.

Consider:
* The Dallas cornerbacks are terrible. Really terrible. Derrick Ross might be a good one in another year or two, but in the era of 3-WR and 4-WR sets, you can't have too many corners. Garrett's got good size (5-10, 196 entering his senior year) and we all know about his speed.
* Parcells loves speed guys on special teams. As much as we'd all like to believe that KG will come into the NFL and shut down Terrell Owens and Randy Moss and Amani Toomer, etc., I think it's safe to say he gets his start on special teams. Parcells has even been known to sacrifice a little size on special teams in favor of guys who can burn it downfield.
* With some added bulk, he could be the fastest safety in the NFL.

Not a bad analysis. I think he'd be a great fit with Dallas, and we'd get to see him on TV every week. Then again, just about every team wants a relatively big CB who can run. Miami might be the only team in the NFL that really doesn't have a need for another cornerback. But I'd love to see him stay in Dallas.

From Todd McShay of The Sporting News:

"A Make-or-Break Weekend

Blame it on Mike Mamula. Thanks to his workout at the NFL's annual National Invitational Camp (you know it as the NFL Scounting Combine), the hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker catapulted from a projected mid-round pick to the seventh overall selection in the 1995 draft by the Eagles. His climb forever changed the way we look at the NFL scouting process.

Despite Mamula's status as a monumental bust, fans now eagerly await the word from scouts at the annual three-day examination/workout in Indianapolis. Players, known and relatively unknown, can improve their draft status and the value of their first NFL contracts by thousands, if not millions, of dollars.

The scouts will eyeball the workout warriors and gnash their teeth over no-shows this weekend, but it's the sleepers who really get them juiced. Five they're downright giddy about seeing in person:

DB Kevin Garrett, SMU. He doesn't have great size (5-10, 195) and he hasn't been coached very well in terms of footwork and technique, but Garrett had five interceptions the last two seasons and is expected to be the quickest and fastest cornerback in this year's Combine. Joseph Jefferson (Colts) ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.35) and Omar Lowe (Dolphins) ran the quickest three-cone drill (6.65) last year. Garrett supposedly can beat both those times.

WR Ryan Hoag, Gustavus Adpolhus....
OT Wade Smith, Memphis....
DE Cliff Washburn, The Citadel....
OLB Chaun Thompson, West Texas A&M.... "

Nice pub for KG! The FIRST guy listed!

While we're talking draft, I gather the stock of little froggy LB LaMarcus McDonald is falling faster than the number of people who openly admit they watch "Joe Millionaire." After playing at 230-some pounds, he dropped 20 or more pounds for one of those senior all-star games, to improve his speed. The only problem was that his speed didn't improve, and he got thrown around. Now he's reported as running a 4.86 in the 40. An outside linebacker (played inside in Fort Worth) running close to a 4.9? If that's accurate, he'll be hard-pressed to even make a team.

So, KG was poorly coached? Is that the opinion of the pro scouts? Ouch. That hurts!

The magazine I copied that from is the current (Feb. 24) issue of The Sporting News, with some NECKcar driver on the cover. The Combine information is stretched across pages 2-3, and I didn't see anywhere where McShay mentioned who he talked to, but since (I think) media isn't allowed inside the Combine, I assume he got his information from head coaches, assistant coaches, general managers and/or other NFL personnel guys.

And yes, KG has posted blistering times since he's come back from the knee injury, from what I've heard. His private workouts supposedly have been extremely impressive, and his knee reportedly is holding up well.
