Re: UNT in a bowl? Really? It was pretty bad under June-especially as a result of his first 2-3 years-remember when he ran off about 8-10 undergraduates in his first few years and he repeatedly culled the roster thereafter whether they had graduated or not. Running off undergraduates usually has a big negative affect on APR. Now after we got down to about 938 APR (930 was the minimum floor) it did improve a bit thereafter but it was never anything more than mediocre under June Jones-mostly because of his roster policies.
Its not reflected in APR but June recruited more non-qualifiers than any school in Texas in his first 2 full classes. That's when it became obvious that SMU had lowered their admission standards and would admit these recruits if the qualified late . Many as in about 10-12 never qualified and headed to JUCO and none were admitted immediately to any other FBS school except one that went to UTSA when it wasn't FBS yet and not subject to FBS admission standards. Never played a down at UTSA. Another tried to go to UCLA but was denied admission until he completed 2 summer school remedial classes just like Turner required at SMU. UCLA rejected him after the 2 remedial classes and he ended up at Oregon St. Never played a down because of a high school injury. The DMN actually published an article showing that something like 23 of 24 recruits in Category C who had to be screened for admission in his first 2 classes were actually admitted to the school eventually. Even June admitted finally that SMU didn't have an admission issue-he called it a curriculum issue which was one of the main reason SMU added new majors in the brand new Simmons School of Education which was designed to address the curriculum issue. Today, the Simmons School of Education is where a large number of our athletes-perhaps a majority get their degrees. Despite June Jones whining-SMU decided to compete in 2008 and he got what he was promised at SMU. His program didn't fail because of admission or curriculum issues but because he hired and coordinated an incompetent staff that had a ridiculous recruiting strategy for a private school in Dallas, Texas. It all fell apart when his only 2 recruiters-Klemm and Surfer Boy left the program,. Chad Morris, all 9 assistants and the entire SMU football staff emphasize recruiting as the No. 1 priority. June Jones didn't know what the hell he was doing in Texas "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
