Xavier Jones Selected To Doak Walker Award Watch List

DALLAS (SMU) — Junior Xavier Jones has been named to the 2018 Doak Walker Award Watch List by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.

The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

Jones led the team with 1,075 yards on 182 carries in 2017, including a career-high 175 yards at Memphis on Nov. 18, and posted nine rushing touchdowns. He also added 14 receptions for 84 yards.

Prior to the 2016 season, Jones also earned Doak Walker Watch List honors, but received a medical redshirt following injury. As a freshman, he registered 634 yards on 152 carries with 10 touchdowns, the most all-time by an SMU freshman.

Ten semifinalists will be named in November, with three finalists to be selected by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee Nov. 20. The recipient of the 2018 Doak Walker Award will be announced live at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 6 on ESPN.

Jones was also named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, presented to the College Player of the Year, on Monday.
