Terrell is not in anyway connected and will not have any effect on us whether he is a bust or not. The people who connect Dallas Cowboys and SMU have always been on Mars - there is no relationship either way.

Ever since Texas stadium went wet, the Cowboys have moved their demographic to the blue collar, don't care about those college boys type fan who are deciding between NASCAR and NFL. Those folks live and breath NFL - I don't get it, but there is virtually no crossover to our fans. We are shooting for our base (getting smaller every year unless something changes - like a bowl game) plus college graduates that adopt SMU (almost non existant but will show up immediately upon the first sign of success), plus park cities families, plus students (starting at 2,000 in game one, and dropping by 500 a game after that).

It is not as big, but our crowd is an attractive demographic for lots of advertisers - who will be pressed hard when an AD with a pulse shows up.

Isn't that what most newscasters and sportscasters are?

Guys, guys, guys, when are you all going to realize that in pro sports you just root for the jersey and not the players anymore. The biggest irony in pro sports is that the fans are so passionate and hate the other team and its players, yet the players (for the most part) all get along and are not too concerned about who they play for. They are just looking for the next big contract. T.O. is no different than Deion or Bosworth in that they know that their mouth and antics lead to more exposure and bigger paydays. Yes, they are better than the average player, but they make the monster money because they have learned to work the system!

Pro sports is becoming more and more like professional wrestling. They put on the big show for the fans and then all go grab a beer after the game and laugh all the way to the bank.

Thank god for the playoffs or there would be no passion left in pro sports!!

T.O. is the only one of the three who can take a hit!

He ducked when the Cowboy player tried to deck him on the mid-field star at Texas Stadium.

I think standing still, we'd all duck if George Teague came at us with his helmet down and a 50-yard head start. But T.O. bounced up. Boz would have been a skidmark on the star, and Deion would have danced out of the way so he could avoid wrinkling his never-dirty uniform.

we try to give smu as much coverage as we can ... becuz i agree with you about phil bennett and what he's doing ... and have said so on the air ... but that's the dark side of my business as well

we're not in the business of promoting a team .. we report on teams our viewers are interested in .... and smu is down the list a ways

but i do promise you this ... we will continue to do positive stories about what they're doing becuz i do think it's a good story

dale

and here's his follow-up reply to another email where I asked him to consider doing an editorial on the 'positive things' taking place in the SMU football program:

i mite do that editorial ... but it is the double edged sword you talk about - but it's the old argument ... which comes 1st - the additional coverage or the fans ... but we'll be covering bennett .... and i do hope they keep going in the right direction

Good gawd -- doesn't Dale have a journalism degree? I understand there are web-accepted abbreviations, but what language is that?
