Mordecai Named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Semifinalist

TYLER, Texas (SPORTyler/SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was today named one of 16 semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, as announced by SPORTyler and the Tyler Chamber of Commerce.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Mordecai is also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award. He is a member of the Manning Award and CFPA National Performer of the Year Watch Lists.

Mordecai was twice named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week (Sept. 21, Sept. 7) and to the award's honor mention list (Nov. 15, Oct. 5).

Mordecai broke the SMU single-season passing TD record (37) with three in the win over UCF. His passing TD total ranks second nationally and his 23.6 points responsible for per game are third, while also ranking in the top 10 for passing yards (7th, 3,264), passing yards per game (7th, 326.4), completions per game (6th, 26.70), passing efficiency (9th, 168.4) and total offense (10th, 345.5).

He has at least four TDs in five of 10 games and has passed for 300+ yards in eight of 10 games this season. His seven TDs against ACU broke the SMU single-game record, and his 37 passing TDs are 15 more than any other player in the conference. He also has 10 consecutive games with 2+ TDs, which ties for second for a Mustang.

Mordecai has been named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week a league-leading four times (Nov. 15, Oct. 25, Sept. 20, Sept. 6).

The Mustangs play at No. 3 Cincinnati Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
