It was a pretty classless for sure, but Samples was the coach these kids where following. He developed really strong ties with them, perhaps filling a void in their lives or maybe not, I really don't know. He definitely had strong ties with them all the same.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
