Tech's Spring Game

Postby ponydawg » Tue Apr 18, 2006 9:56 am

I understand it was damn windy, but I would think they could have scored more than 3 points in the first 3 quarters. Hope it is that windy when we go there.......

From Espn:

Texas Tech defense gets six sacks in spring game

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech's defense made it tough on the offense Saturday, coming up with six sacks and allowing only a field goal through the first three quarters of the annual Red-Black game.

"Defensively, I think this is the most impressive group of guys able to respond to play after play," Tech coach Mike Leach said. "Overall, they did a great job making big plays and working well together."

Sophomore walk-on linebacker Calen Shearer led with seven tackles. Three others had six tackles each.

"We came out and competed real well for our offense," senior nose tackle Chris Hudler said. "We kept them out of the end zone as much as possible."

The offense was limited to 223 yards in the first half after losing 20 yards on the ground. It finished with 438 yards.

Kobey Lewis, the leading rusher with 33 yards on seven carries, scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore walk-on quarterback Ryan Rowland completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Kelly Hildebrandt.

Sophomore quarterback Graham Harrell completed 27-of-38 passes for 227 yards. He was sacked twice. Redshirt freshman Chris Todd completed 15-of-23 for 119 yards.

"We moved the ball at times, and then there were times when we couldn't get the ball to move very far. I think we can definitely improve on some things but overall I feel that we played pretty good," Harrell said.

Pretty efficient for a QB playing in horrible conditions.

Lubbock U will light it up this year-- but that offense will take some time.

When a walk-on makes 7 tackles in the spring game, the offense has a way to go.

I'm glad we play em in the 1st week.

Remember the last time SMU walked into Jones Stadium when Tech was breaking in a no name QB? BJ Symons put 300+ yards up and was eating nachos by the second series of the 2nd half.

Still, Bennett will have something up his sleeve for Crazy Mike Leach. It's always fun to watch a good defensive HC and offensive mind square off against each other.

I thought it was tortillas.

I have visions of round two of Bennett v Leach in Lubbock...with Bennett being the victor in a no-holds-barred, winner-take-all match!

Hopefully since some of the players have been to that Big XII venue before and there will not be a hurricane threatening we will not be overwhelmed as we were at aTm. Still it will be a tough challenge. Home field has made a big difference in this series.

I think those in attendance were a lot more concerned with Heat Stroke than Huricane warnings. Surely, we aren't using the Huricane as an excuse on a bright sunny cloudless day in College Station. We got whupped because A&M was physically superior at every position on the football field.

take away the illegal procedure and romo's fumble and we held our own for the entire first half.. 2nd half would have been a different story..

that o-line jumping and the fumble was the first dagger
