Roster changes

Postby Big Easy Pony » Sun Jul 21, 2024 2:08 pm

We've talked about who joined the team this year, but never about who left. So I compared last year's roster to this year's, and here's the scholarship players, other than those who are graduated and done with college football. Feel free to add if I missed anyone.

DB Bryan Massey (transferred to Houston)
CB Bryce McMorris
LB JaQwondis Burns
DE Je'lin Samuels
TE Nolan Matthews-Harris
WR-CB Teddy Knox
CB Keyshon Mills
DE Jayden Jones
OT Sean Scott
TE Lonnie Johnson
DT-OL Braylen Jackson
DT Daemian Wimberly (transferred to UTSA)

There are a lot of guys on that list who have some real talent, so you hate to see them go.

But some of them split because of the major upgrade in recruiting and transfers. We're not FSU or Clemson yet, but we're headed in the right direction.

Massey - never fully recovered from injury and the S room is just so deep he wasn't going to see much time.
McMorris - Injury casualty
Burns - I wish he came back because he was good on special teams. But he was going to fall to 3rd team LB so I get it.
Samuels - I LOVE the potential and the frame. But he could never quite make it happen, couldn't stay healthy, and in and out of the doghouse. Might do well somewhere with a change of scenery, but I think he was going to be 3rd string here this season.
Harris - the TE room was deep, he wasn't going to see any time.
Knox - Maybe the biggest miss on the list. I thought he showed a lot of promise at CB, but couldn't overcome the off field stuff. I hope he gets a shot at corner somewhere.
Mills - never popped.
Jayden Jones - solid player, but I think he was going to fight for a 3rd string spot with Samuels.
Sean Scott - promising tackle, wish he wouldn't have left. 3rd string this season.
Lonnie Johnson - I think he is going to be good. We are just so, so, so deep at TE. I don't blame him at all for leaving.
Braylen Jackson - I think he is a G5 player.
Wimberly - potential. I think he will be a very good G5 player at UTSA.

Knox at corner is really the only guy I think would have had an impact this season.

Yeah, but Massey is a stud return guy. A while back, there were some pundits who said he might have an NFL future as a return guy. Sure, he wants to play defense, too, but I'd like to see him still here, if only for the return game.

Massey hasn't been that same guy since the ankle injury. Brashard Smith is our primary returner and is an upgrade at that positon.
