2019 SMU at Memphis Set AAC Attendence Record

Postby max the wonder dog » Thu Aug 22, 2024 7:14 pm

Looking at website with info on renovation of Liberty Bowl Stadium and came across this fun fact:

With 59,506 attendees, the 2019 Ponies at Memphis game had "The largest attendance for an AAC game in league history."

The Attendance was only in 9th place for Liberty Bowl Stadium. The other Top Ten attendance games were against Ole Miss (5) and Tennessee (4).

What a game that was. SMU could have won that game if we didn't give up so many 3rd and long conversions. We played great on 1st and 2nd down on defense but they converted a ton of those 3rd and longs.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

I seem to recall the difference in that game was our lack of talent on special teams but I could be misremembering :?

You are sadly correct.

Having our kickoffs go to Antonio Gipson that day and to the Coog High returner at the end of the game 2 years later were testaments to our special teams debacles.

I was at that game, and special teams was for sure the biggest problem. We couldn't punt the ball which consistently gave Memphis great field position.

I got curious and pulled up the old Memphis box score. Just look at the difference in punting and kicking stats and the one TD Memphis scored (under team stats). Made all the difference in what turned out to be a 6 point loss.

A next door neighbor went to that game. I was supposed to go with him, but a family health issue came up, so I missed it.
