Yup he was actually mentioned as in pre-season Heisman talks before one of his seasons at SMU. One of his 14 seasons at SMU. It was too bad too, because it turned out to be one of those seasons that he was injured in the first game.

Yes, Ramon's season ended on the first play of the game against Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. I remember taking some heavy ribbing at that game from some hog fans. Ended up almost in a fist fight with a drunk guy in a red plastic hat. Then, in a continued fit of anger, almost took the head off of an SMU fan who I mistook for an sarcastic Arkansas fan.

I'm much more in control of my faculties these days.

That was a great game at Ownby. Wally Lynn was going nuts on the radio broadcast. I think that was when Donte Womack showed what he could do as a running back.

Too bad Womack and Flanigan were on the bench against TCU in '97... things might be very different right now. That game against TCU, I still see as the turning point in the two programs.

Of course us not offering LaDanian might have had something to do with it to.

The uniforms the Ponies wore then were the best since I've been around. What a great look.

Rather short pass to Brian Berry, a.k.a. the 83-yard specialist.

Actually watched the 4th quarter of that game on tape a week or 2 ago.
Remembered it was close, but didn't remember if we pulled it out.

You must've missed the red helmet / blue jersey Hayden Fry and earlier
uniform. Those were even better, but the 94 uniforms are better than
what we have now.

I don't know, I thought the white helmet was as good as it gets.

Was that Franchione on the New Mexico Sideline? He looked a little disappointed.

Look for a similar facial impression this year from Franocchio at Aggie High.
At $2 million per year (or close to it), does he survive if A&M dips under .500 this year?

If Bennett is under .500, and Franchione is too, and they both get the boot, I wonder if Franchione suddenly becomes a candidate for SMU.

Truthfully, he did good work at New Mexico & TCU. He can't help that Texas had Vince Young and a better defense.

With a bust at A&M, seems like a possibility to me.

Thoughts????

(And don't take it that I am for something like this...I like Coach Bennett, but as long as we are speculating records and the corresponding events coming from those records, well, that is what I think....)

Absolutely. That game and SMU's first game of the following season - an overtime loss to Rice; really seemed to take the wind out of the sails quickly.
