Texas Tech Position By Positionthe Texas Tech Rivals website has an excellent position by position two-deep breakdown of the Tech team. One claim has me very surprised and skeptical. Most outside the Tech family believe the big questionmark for Tech will be at RB. This report seems pretty confident that Tech has quality and depth at the position. The report says none of the challengers Baron Batch, Shannon Woods and Kobey Lewis are plow-horses and choosing among these three is like choosing between Secretariat, Affirmed and Man O'War. I'm pretty shocked at that claim but it clearly conveys the belief that Tech will not be hurting at RB. We shall see. Anyway he rates all three in running, receiving and blocking and claims that Batch is No. 1 in all 3 categories. I'm a little surprised at that too but he was the most highly recruited of the 3. Woods is the only one with significant numbers but did run for 7.0 ypc on 24 carries. Not bad even if in limited duty.
Re: Texas Position By Position
Of course 2 out of 3 of those are dead, so there may be a problem.
I know those guys have talent, but the Secretariat/Affirmed/ManO'War reference makes it sound like they have Reggie Bush, Barry Sanders and Edgerrin James in the backfield. Let's not get carried away. These guys are talented athletes, to be sure, but they don't need a road map to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend just yet.
The first thing to remember is that in 2001 Ricky Williams had a great season and everyone said we would struggle in 2002 without him. So to hear people think we will struggle without Henderson isn't surprising. The biggest thing we will miss from Henderson is that he only lost two fumbles in four seasons.
Shannon Woods (5'11, 203) has a lot of potential but struggled last spring. He has been good this summer though. Some Red Raiders think we are using the three headed monster at RB until Baron Batch (5'10, 190) hits his stride. He was a sprinter in HS and had some good 100 meter times. Both these guys are bigger, stronger, and fastert than Henderson. The biggest question is blocking. Kobey Lewis (5'6, 169) would be the starter but is just too small to handle the amount of blocking the starter needs to handle. He will get plenty of touches and make some plays for us. He is a shifty and surprisingly strong RB. Ironically, he is a very good red zone RB. I guess he gets lost in the crowd. How good will these guys be? I don't know. Baron Batch is probably the only one who could be a star and he probably isn't going to be his true FR year.
Are you sure? EDIT - Yes I run into Stallion at games all the time. He's a big time fan. But all the same can we nominate his last post for post of the pre-season? ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
But isn't this backwards. Don't most people get their undergraduate degrees from somewhere and then their law degree from SMU? Just send 'da money.
I'd bet that Baron Batch is eventually the full-time starter, but all 3 play against SMU. The decision has not been made as of yesterday. Food for thought Batch finished 7th in the Texas 5A 100 Meters dash as a Senior in High School so he could be a big problem with those wide splits.
