Easy question that I forgot the answer to

Why did we only play ten games in 1999 when we could have played twelve? Why were the two games cancelled? and who were they against? I think one game was San Jose State. Was the other UNLV?

As I recall, that was an 11-game year. The game at SJSU was cancelled at gametime because they had a transformer blow up and they had no lights.

It was going to be replayed if necessary for WAC championships or whatever. Needless to say, the game didn't get replayed.

It was a twelve game year. I was doing research on conference wins. We only had six conference games that year. Everybody else on our schedule had at least twelve games that year (though TCU curoiusly had 11 plus the Sun Bowl).

Wasn't a game cancelled because of wildfires or something?

Edit: Regis, you are right, it was a very weird year were WAC only had 7 conference games; it was they first year post-WAC-MWC breakup, I guess.

I believe that back then if a team played at Hawaii, the NCAA allowed that team to schedule an extra home game that year to help offset the travel costs out to Hawaii.

To prove this theory, check to see if the WAC teams that played 12 games in the regular season played at Hawaii.

And that was part of the confusion. If you play at Hawaii, you got an extra game, plus there were more "preseason" classic games, too. So, most teams in the WAC had 12 games. Add to that the seven-game conference schedule oddity in the WAC that year, I was really thrown off.

And the San Jose game was cancelled due to that amazing transformer stadium blackout. It would have been scheduled again if either team had a chance to be bowl eligible. Needless to say, neither team was in that position. I'm so glad we're out of the WAC.

I was hacked too, because tha game was supposed to be televised. Watching that boradcast was worse than a rain delay in baseball.

I will not mention the "boradcast" since I am a better person than you and would not dream of pointing out typos.!!!!

THE ANSWER:

We had an 11 games season, starting out 0-5.

The SJSU game was cancelled Saturday due to the transformer blowout as mentioned above

We could have played it Sunday, but we were unable to secure air transport back after the game (or, perhaps it was cost prohibitive).

Since we weren't doing all that well (1-5 at this point), they TENTATIVELY re-scheduled' the game for c.Dec 8th weekend.

We couldn't get the Cotton Bowl, and SJSU couldn't use their stadium due to the NCAA Soccer tournament - so Highland Park Highlander Stadium was even discussed as a possible solution.

As the season went along, we ended up winning our conference games, it looked like if we won our LAST scheduled game (TCU), we would have been able to TIE for the conference championship IF we beat SJSU (likely, because they were horrible and that would have meant we just won 5 in a row), and thus win the Conference by tie breaker.

Thus, that game was to be played only if it made a difference.

Furthermore, we would have been 6-5 with a win over a Div-1aa (CalState?) and would have won our conference, but only 5 wins required for a Bowl bid, so we would have had to get a waiver to play in a conference champ bowl (likely to be given).

This was also the year that we broke Hawaii's 25+ game losing streak with a crap performance in week 3.

NOTE: This 4-game unlikely win streak started with a big win over a 1-AA team.

Power Outage Cancels Football Game With San Jose State
Game Will Be Rescheduled Only if Necessary

The SMU football game at San Jose State was cancelled Saturday night after an electrical transformer exploded and caught fire near Spartan Stadium, knocking out electricity to the stadium.

No one was reported injured and firefighters soon arrived to extinguish the flames. The explosion caused a power outage to all the field lights, stadium phones and a scoreboard.

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson, who was at the game, said the game would be rescheduled only if necessary.

As it turned out, we lost that last game.
