Postby ThadFilms » Mon Aug 28, 2006 9:11 am

Happy reading:

There was also a blurb about Willis & Cunningham:

.... I'm sure the webd dudes will have these up in no time, or at least the top one...

Anyhow, good read. Now let's go beat Tech.

Great story by Calvin Watkins on the Bennett/Leach dance last time the teams met. I still contend (without knowing first-hand) that Bennett's beef with The Leach was not that he kept calling plays, but that Tech brought in that 6'9" receiver for a jump ball. That was inexcusable. Running their offense meant throwing, and Coach Bennett knew that. But practicing a gimmick play is horse#*@$.

The coaches seem to have made some peace with the events, but I wonder if out juniors and seniors can say the same. They'll hopefully be looking for some payback in the form of a win.

While I don't expect it, it would be nice.

I like this Leach quote:

"They talk about TCU and UT-El Paso on our nonconference schedule, but SMU beat both of those teams last year," Leach said. "Having watched their films, they are getting better people, and last year they were on the threshold."

Yes. I was "heartened" by that.

2004 redux

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Aug 28, 2006 12:52 pm

Considering that the final score in 2005 was not so very bad, the pass happy Leach doesn't know how to run a team but one way regardless of the outcome. I don't expect that Tech will let up in Lubbock this year either. In 2004 SMU's secondary was highly vulnerable. In 2006, the Tech offense is stronger than ever. Who is ever going to stop Joel Filani? Tech has become a QB school. This one could get ugly even though PB has his best team yet. This is not hyperbole when I suggest that keeping Tech under 50 points will be a minor achievement defensively. We can't compete in a scoring track meet with anybody, so chalk this one up to playing the wrong team in the wrong town at the wrong time - then move on. Despite our problems on opening weekend, UNT has even bigger problems on their hands and will limp into our game on 9/9 when we begin our real season of competition.

How can Tech be " a QB school" with one QB in the NFL, one who is 3rd string and I dont know if hes ever had a regular season snap?

Well maybe because Tech plays COLLEGE FOOTBALL and everyone of Tech's last 3 QBs has lead the Nation in passing. That might be a clue-for those of you that don't know they played football in College before the Pro-Game was invented.

WOPPITY DOO. They led the nation in passing, you know what Sonnny Cumbie is doing now, hes an intern for Red Raider Radio, thats some big dollar signs there. The idea of college football is, for many people, to get to the NFL. Well really its about eduacation

Doesn't Stallion normally tell us the lack of SMU pros is a sign of a bad football team?

"He's like one of my favorite guys in coaching, has been for a long time," Leach said. "There's only about five minutes in my whole life I've been mad at Phil Bennett, and that was then. And I think he was madder than me. He's a fantastic guy and one of my all-time favorites

He speeches english real good. Seriously, does anyone else get the feeling that Leach was trying to convince himself of of his own words with that statement?

I actually agree - and I'm not talking about SMU keeping Tech under 50. Tech seems to be able to plug in a new QB every other year and they just keep putting up tons of yards and points. With all of their receivers coming back, they honestly scare the crap out of me this year. I know the loss of Henderson (RB) will hurt but I'd rather they lost half of their receivers. Maybe this is the year that they have a dropoff due to a new QB but, until that happens, I have to expect that the offense will keep moving the ball and putting up points. And for a team (TCU) with two new starting corners, that's a dangerous proposition. Perhaps the new rule changes regarding the clock stopping less often will allow Tech's opponents to burn more clock and keep the ball out of the Tech offense's hands. At any rate, best of luck against Tech!!
